I recently bought a pedal from a music store in Denver, and it didn't do it for me...the only other thing they have that I may be interested in is a Keeley Compressor. I've never toyed with one, but the last thing I need is another dirt box. I'm thinkin the Compressor could come in handy, and be useful at some point. Any thoughts?

I like the way a compressor sounds. I have a black label Boss that I have had for years. I catch myself leaving it on 90% of the time. I have been wanting to upgrade it to a Keeley or something else, but I can't seem to pull the trigger. I have heard from several people the HBE is a great compressor for the price.
On another note, you have me thinking I need a Mosferatu really bad!!!

You might like it Lefty. I couldn't part with mine. It's works great to add a little 3D sound to your single note runs. I love the way it sounds into a light boost, phaser, or analog delay (or all 3 at once sometimes) as well. I just don't recommend it much for rhythm tones. Let me know what you think if you take the plunge. I'd say it's a great tool to have in your clean tone arsenal...

I've never played a Keeley compressor but I own the HBE compressor retro. In my opinion, it's amazing. It is extremely quiet, first of all. I run it after my overdrives and it adds almost no noise. It is also very transparent and works really great as a boost pedal. I had a TC electronics compressor for years (still have it) which are highly sought after I hear, but the HBE is so much better. As I said, I haven't played the Keeley but I just can't imagine a better compressor than my HBE. I am very happy with it. It doesn't give much of that Boss-type thick attack that some people like for country, it's more neutral or smooth sounding so I wouldn't recommend it if that is what you want but for me that's an artifact I can do without.

I had an Analogman Juicer for a while, I found that mostly it cut out the dynamics present in the Mazerati. I did not feel that it gave me that "Sultans of Swing" tone, or that Steely Dan sound. I tried to use it in other ways, but with my setup I just didn't like it. I also owned the Barber one for a while. I guess compressors just aren't my thing. I'm trying to talk you out of it, like you asked.

I've been using a compressor for few years now. I have a Carl Martin, which is very nice and a Barber Tone Press. The Tone Press has a blend control that adds the dry sound to the compressed. I just ordered the AYA r compressor thats demoed on the Xotic site I'll post when I get that. I've also tried the Keeley, it's a great unit. I use the compressor to fatten up the sound, for me it's more of a feel than a sound. I miss it if I don't have it on. It can really give a clean or semi clean sound a nice feel and texture. If you really want to be talked out of it ask your wife. Good luck.

LOL!! But April is soooo far away!!! Let me know what you want me to bring for sure so I can get my ducks in a row. I would bring some of my floor toys for you to try, but I know how I would feel about trying new gear at a gig.

My favorite compressor is my Black Box Oxygen but it's got 6 knobs, too much to think about. I really like my little green Guyatone. It has a switch to let the dry sound in also. It's really a good pedal. I prefer to run the compressor into a low gain o/d instead of after. Really sweet and sustainy that way. The best thing about a little conpression for me is how it feels like you are playing much louder than you actually are.

I retired my compressor after getting my RxES. All the other amps I had, including the Mazerati, Carmen Ghia & Z-28 all seemed to benefit from the compressor - I needed to get "that sound" When I first started playing my RxES I used it, but soon afterwards, I took it out of the chain (it didn't fit in my Boss BCB-60 case w/ the other pedals so it was always "outside" the case) and dang if I didn't get "that sound" that I wanted all along. See? I don't need to have EVERY pedal that Brad Paisley uses! But, that said, best of luck with the Keeley - it's excellent. tomtheguitarguy

Lefty, I have a Keeley Compressor and it's a magic pedal, very quiet, works like a dream and yes it adds to the sound that 3D quality. I don't overdo attack (around 9-10 o'clock), volumen ( 2-3 o'clock) and it just makes everything sound better, definition of the tone becomes superb. LPA

It's probable just me but I think the compressor is the hardest pedal to get adjusted and to feel right I've ever owned or played. I just don't like dampening my dynamics while I'm playing. I've had the Keeley comp and the Analogman Bi-Comp and I thought the Bi-comp was the better of the two, specially with my Ghia. But I really didn't like either pedal. I would just keep tweaking it until I couldn't tell it was on. So I finally took the Bi-comp of my board and sold it.

I really dig the sound files on Keeley's site by Jason Barker, it sounds a lot like a loudness control on your stereo. I'll be curious to see how it interacts with OD's. More news as it happens!

The Keeley will add some color and harmonics- Doesn't get really squashed, and I've never had a problem with losing dynamics. I've got mine set so that you don't really know when it's on... But you do when it's off... J

Sorry, but I can't talk you out of it! I've had mine going on three years, and it's always stayed on my board. I kind of pick and choose when I use it, for both clean percussive chickin' pickin' type leads; and also for adding sustain on overdriven leads. Then I'll leave it on all the time at a low sustain level for very low volume gigs. It's very transparent. I hadn't owned a compressor in years before I bought this one. In the past I had an original MXR compressor and then the first Boss one. Another guitar player in my band has the HBE, and it really sounds good. But I just love my Keeley, and it blows away either one I had before. Also, if you play any slide at all, it seems to quiet a lot of the fret noise and you don't have to worry about notes fretting out and losing sustain. Hope this helps.

Got it today...I'm sad to say...WOW! With the Sustain @ 9:00 and the Volume @ 12:00...very cool. just like I thought...it really brings out the tones of the amp! Now the Q is where to put it? Before or after lead pedals?

put it before lefty.. after experimenting w/ mine for over a year now I've decided it's best the closer you can get it to your pickups. I'd put it after your Teese though. I think a compressed signal into a wah sounds kinda sh**ty. just my 2...

Keeley suggests after drive pedals. I've tried it both ways and currently run it before. But I'm sure the results vary with the drive pedal. The nice thing about the Keeley is that it's quiet enough to have the option!

I think a compressor sounds best ahead of everything.

I've got my Keeley after my wah and before everything else. Tried it after the drive pedals but it sounds better where its at. Just see what your ear likes.

Agree with billyguitar- the compresser is first in the chain and I just use it as a clean boost for solos (level at 12 - 2 o/c) with a touch of compression (9 - 10 o/c) when the amp is not fully cranked. It sounds so good I sometimes just leave it on! MInd you the other effects are looped out most of the time so it is gtr-compressor-amp, pure and simple. Never use it when the amp is cranked, or with other effects (delay/flange/wah).
