How do you view the differences between Lo, Med and Hi Gain pedals? When do you use them? What are your favorites of each type?

i view low gain as a boost to clean with just a bit of dirt to complement the clean "spank".......i use an AC Booster with little gain.
medium gain is my Rolling Stones type, southern rock thing. maybe some early Zep. plenty o' grit, but not full blown distortion.....i use a Fulltone Distortion Pro with the trim pots adjusted down for this
high gain is all out rock. AC/DC to 80's hair metal. scooped a little and lots of gain. modded Marshall sound......i use a Marshall Guv'nor 2
all of this has a modded CS-3 compressor in front and a Visual Sound H2O behind into a Carmen Ghia 2x10
that is my setup anyway. ;D

My Mazerati's volume at 12:00 is my best low gain, I can add some Beano Boost to that. Low gain is my Phatman with the gain at 10:00 for lower volumes (bedroom). This is a little gritty, but my Mazerati's tone is still very present. Low gain for me means that if I play very lightly no one would know the Phatman is on, yet a brisk attack brings out the hair. It's my favorite use for an overdrive, just a bit o'hair enough for classic rock or some blues. For medium gain I can either turn up the Phatman to 12:00 and /or hit the Beano Boost which is placed before the Phatman. The Beano is really what I use for solo's to intensify what ever gain level I choose. This level of gain is more like hard rock with some great sustain. It's hard to describe, it's a pretty unique tone to me. I wasn't trying to "copy" anyones sound when I assembled my rig. I just knew that I could do classic rock, blues, jazz, or country tones, and sound great which ever way I went. For higher gain I could turn the Phatman up more, but I admit this is where the amp's dynamics begin to decrease. Full gain on the Phatman and some beano is just way over the top. At that point who needs to tune or play well? So for "high" gain I guess I go for the AM Sunface Fuzz. This allows for more dynamic interaction with the amp, than with the Phatman dimed. And of course any of these levels can be attained with the Fuzz by turning down the guitars volume pot. Sometimes I wish that I had a nice clean boost, but both of my guitars have a little more volume on the bridge pups anyway. Between the bridge pups, the Beano, and the Phatman (gain off, volume up) I can achieve some type of boost.
