I purchased a T-Rex Replica a while back and I am considering selling it for the following reasons: - 1. Nearly $500.00 spent on one pedal, and music is
not a source of income for me. Don't know if I can Justify such a "splurge" for a hobby.
- 2. I still prefer the warmer analog delays to add
ambience to saturated leads and solos. The Replica is amazing for warm and accurate clean delays and for a mostly to completely "wet" delay effect, but a bit too acurate to use to fill out solos.
- 3. $500.00 on a single pedal!!!
That being said, I picked up a new Boss DD-20 Giga Delay on sale for $179.00 from MF. Its a quality built pedal and has a lot of cool features. I don't really care that its not True Bypass, but I want to know if any of you think the DD-20 is killing my tone. Anybody using this pedal? Do I need an intervention? Am I about to make a big mistake? Please help! -Greg

It just doesn't mean always that if something is expensive is also worth the money. T-Rex is made in Denmark and this is one of the most expensive country in EU for living, so their products go also with that as well as TC Electronic. It's a quality product but some ordinary listener will never notice the difference between Replica and Boss with the same delay time. I got my Keeley Compressor one week ago and I was so happy because I noticed the difference right on but my girlfriend just didn't notice anything as well as my band mates, specially for the money ($220). For them it's like buying an air. I can't help but for me it's a day and night difference worth every $. So if you don't notice or don't value any difference it's better for Replica to let it go into another home. I have Boss DD3 and it's a great delay pedal but I wish Replica some day in the future.

I sure somebody here would give you a few hundred to recoup for the boss. I paid 300 new for mine and love it

If it doesn't work or feel right to you, than by all means sell it. It does seem like you paid ALOT for it at 500.00. They retail for 420.00 at my local store, and I just saw a "used once in church" go for 355.00 on EBAY. Good luck!

I'm looking for a better delay pedal after buying a DD-20 and having it ruin my tone. So YMMV.

Well.... Thanks for all your input. First off, I actually paid about $430.00 for it ($500.00 just sounds more sensational ). I've been using the DD-20 and have been generally unhappy with the way it affects the tone. It's not that it changes the tone as much as it takes away from the dynamic response. I just seem to "feel" the amp less with the DD-20 in my signal chain. One of the biggest problems is that the DD-20 can either be set to -20dB output or +4dB output. At -20dB, even with the effect off, there is a significant signal loss (what I mean by not "feeling" the amp) and at +4dB the signal is boosted too much to be used in front of an amp (that mode is probably intended for an effects loop). So, while it looked like a good option, bottom line is that its not up to snuff to be used with a Z. Back to the T-Rex. It truly is an amazing pedal. The range of delay effects from subtle echo to swimming in full on wet echo harmonies is truly inspiring. The tap tempo is a must and the tone is impeccable. I guess I just need to let it go and realize that the money is spent and the end result is that I am very happy with the pedal. I guess I just needed to be reminded of why I play Dr. Z amps and that any effect that takes away from that experience just needs to be ruled out immediately. Its just that its very expensive to be so obsessed with tone (understatement ), and once in a while the rational human being in me has to make sure that I'm not just crazy . Again, thanks for all the input. Thank God for MF's lenient return policy ;D -Greg

Hey Greg, If ya sell the replica and still need/ want a delay... could try SPF's I-5 delay... I hear it's warm and anolog sounding and it's TRUE BYPASS... think it's around 199.00 I noticed fellow forum member bks on the "post a pic o pedals" thread had one on his pedal board..might shoot him a pm an ask him how he likes it... I almost asked him about it myself on the thread... I have n SIB echo drive pedal that's TRUE BYPASS and tube driven... it sounds pretty good... I like it, just don't use delay that much.... it was around 250.00 but SIB makes a non- tube version and It's still TRUE BYPASS and it'ds way cheaper.. think it's around 150.00.... and then theres the toadworks REDUX, haven't heard of anybody using it but looks like a cool pedal also TRUE BYPASS for around 175.00.... any of these would be IMHO better than a non-true bypass boss... shouldn't affect your tone until you turn it on and then most should sound pretty good... more anolog sounding and not going to be super clean like the BOSS.. I think you'd have to go w/ a black box QUICKSILVER for cleaner in true bypass and then your getting back up there in price around the same as the REPLICA.... Jason

Yeah, even the "analog" delay models sounded too digital and sterile on the DD-20. Jason, I actually gave up on saving money. I'll probably end up spending more by keeping the T-Rex and finding a true-bypass analog delay. I've been using the T-Rex for more complex clean timed delays and the echo side of the Visual Sound H2O Chorus/Echo for the shorter analog sounding delays to fill out solos. The H2O sounds good and doesn't seem to suck tone, but I don't use the chorus side very often making it one big and cumbersome delay pedal. I was looking at the Maxon AD999 analog delay. Guitar Player gave it high marks, supposed to have a very warm analog delay tone and plenty of delay time at 900ms. The sound samples I've heard sound pretty good and it also does the self-oscillation thing so you can get those crazy space-ship landing sounds (not very practical, but I always wanted to have a delay that does that ;D). I guess trying to save money is a fruitless venture when you're an obsessive compulsive tone-snob . The only real way to save money would be to give up the guitar entirely, and I don't see that happening anytime soon ;D. There, I feel better, thanks for the group therapy session -Greg

Sell 'em all and get a Fulltone TTE!! I'd love to have one but the price vs. use keeps me away.

Greg, I'm crazy too....and I use the same kind of thought process (justification?) to absorb the insanity. Sounds like you're keeping the T-Rex then, congrats.
FWIW, for basic delay stuff I'm quite satisified with the DLS Echotap unit, but I suspect this unit will go into the "tool bin" when my echoczar arrives. That's some serious crazy, and that's where your thinking mimics mine! Or mine yours...whatever ;D
Terry
my edit: I just wanted to observe that for $250 this DLS thing is pretty decent, like for use on a gig. It's real straightforward, and the "tone" control is interesting. TB, tap tempo, stereo in/out....it's got the goods.

There are still quite a few real analog delays that are great pedals that go for reasonable prices... The old Boss DM-3 is a great delay, and can be found reasonably inexpensive... at least it could still be found relatively cheaply a year or so ago.
The Analogman modded EH Deluxe Memory Man is another good option.
On a budget, the DanEcho has some decent sounds, and the Line 6 products are supposed to be pretty good.
Also the old Boss DD-2 (the original Boss digital delay) is a digital delay with a very warm, analog-like tone, and it even self-oscillates. These can be had for VERY reasonable $$$... The made in Japan ones are supposedly better than the made in Taiwan ones, annecdotally... but that could be hype.
Then there's the Diamond Memory Lane analog delay for about the same $$$ as a Replica... And then there's the EchoCzar of course.

Lefty, just thought I'd let you know I bought a Verbzilla on eBay yesterday based on your reviews of that box! 'Verb, here I come!
It was either that or a Boss RV-3... I went with the 'zilla because of your reviews.

Hey Greg, I picked up a used AD900 and it's a really warm and spacious sounding delay. It's my Live at Pompei in a box but it will also do a nice slapback sound if that's what your going for. It only does about 600ms as opposed to the 900ms on the AD999 but I've heard it's a little warmer sounding because of the original Panasonic BB chips. Just a thought if you're considering the Maxons. It kicked the Memory Man & DL4 off my board...

Hello all, I've been out sick for a few days and away from the computer. Glad to see the suggestions are still coming in! Even though I've decided that the T-Rex is a phenomenal pedal, I would prefer to find another pedal that's a little less expensive, a little more "analog" and plenty of echo time. Lefty -- You're supposed to be helping, not just giving me more G.A.S.! Aren't those things like a kazillion dollars? ;D I think if I removed all my pedals from my Pedal Train Jr. it might fit. Terryg -- I think its safe to say that we're all a bit "crazy" otherwise we wouldn't waste so much time on this d@mn forum giving each other G.A.S. everyday! ;D Johnnyl -- I've also heard that the AD900 is warmer sounding than the AD999, but I also heard that it isn't true bypass. Is that the case with yours? How much did you find it for (used I'm guessing)? As for the Line 6 DL4, it would be great to have the tap tempo, looping and presets, but I've heard so many mixed things about those units. You see them everywhere on stages all over the country, but my experience with Line 6 stuff has been hit or miss. I guess if I found one used for a decent price it would be worth a shot. At least its true bypass. Oh well, the quest continues... -Greg

I have an Maxon AD999 and it sounds incredible, far better than a Maxon AD80 I had and also 100X better than a T-Rex! I played one of those head to head with the Maxon (analog) and the T-Rex (digital) is not analog sounding at all, the brown switch is just muddy. Also the Maxon is true bypass and the best build quality I've ever seen inside and out (and that includes Way Huge, Red Witch and Analogman). You can't go wrong with one. + it's 900ms of analog delay!!! Sell the T-Rex, buy one and TIP foot to dial controller for the speed (if you miss the tap tempo).

got rid of my Verbzilla, sounded like a pretty good verb , just not a gigging pedal for me , small knobs ,cant tell where the settings are. some of these companies need to understand that not everyone that buys there stuff have perfect eyes, I dont need a pedal that I need to put on my reading glasses to change the settings. 1st thing thats gonna pop off of the verbzilla is those tiny little black knobs. Ive figured out Delay is the only way for me with a amp that doesnt have a real spring verb

I may have to get one just on principle and price. I had one years ago and sold it for 150.00 before they RI the AD-9. It was a great box but a bad case of GAS...well you know the story.

+1 Hey Bill, tell me about your 'board and power supply, I'm lookin'. Thx, Curt[/quote] Curt, it's just an SKB board...without using the available loops...I just bypass and go straight through the pedals to the amp to outsmart the SKB tone sucking gremlin! Basically just using the board, velcro, and power (supplied by the TU 2). Btw, most using this board do it this way.

Thanks, A step ahead of my home made black plywood/velcro/one spot thru TU-2/ stuffed in a Laptop bag !!!!
Actually it's a real effective rig, just pisses me off the knobs some how get spun while it's bagged ?!?
Lookin' at a Pedal Train board with a power pad ? supply maybe. I'd like something with a hard lid to keep the "knob gremlin" out.
Looks like we got a 4 or 5 way race to "Kahunaville" goin' !!! LOL

I would seriously consider the AD-9 if it had more delay time. 300ms is right on the edge of where I might like a bit more time to mess with.
Adamross -- I don't know if I understand how you were suggesting to control the delay time of the AD999 with an external controller. Could you elaborate? I found an AD999 for a about $300 new, so that might be interesting.
