I haven't heard many people discussing the cab, but it isn't the 2x12 open back with a gold and blue upgrade. It's an entirely new 2x12 cab with different construction and dimensions. On paper, the cabs don't seem much different from a dimension perspective, unless I'm missing something?? Other than the oval opening vs the straight opening in the back, what are the differences from a construction perspective for the cab? Just curious....... Keith I've got the same questions Keith... I don't have a "regular" Z 2-12 openback cab, so I have nothing to compare it to. That said...I really like the Wreck cab. Also, much lighter than the 2-12 RXES I used to have!! DOes this cab use "lens technology"? I would imagine it does, because I've noticed walking around while playing, the sound seems to hit you from every angle. Standing right in front of it, about 3' out, it seems like the speakers are pointing up at you. And from an angle to the side, same thing. Also the sound coming from the rear is nice and smooth and really fills up the room. Another thing that I knew, but this speaker combo makes me realize, is that the Blue really has a good bit more highs than the Gold. You can really hear the chime and sparkle coming from the left side of this cab. Sounds great, and seems to be getting better, but I've heard the Blue flub a bit when playing the Les Paul with the neck pickup at loud volumes. As I said though, it seems to be not happening as much the more hours I get on these AlNiCo's. One more thing I like about all Z amps is the big rubber feet. They don't slide around like those little metal pads I'm used too. Adds more cushion and stability to me.

Interesting. I missed the cab dimensions when I updated my spreadsheet - have to fix that on the next update. They are pretty close to the existing 2x12 open back, but not exactly the same.

I guess one of the differences is the series speaker configuration that give the 16 ohm combination. I guess Doc et al. found the 16 ohm tap to be better sounding than the rest. Having to buy the additional cabinet is something that did put me on the fence about buying the Z-Wreck (well, temporarily ;D). I mean if the regular 212 with Blues is darn close (or even upgrading one Blue to a Gold)...that's another Z head instead of buying another cabinet (for me anyway!). Keith

Anyone noticing a change as these speakers break in?

Anyone noticing a change as these speakers break in? Well...I am!... This thing is sounding sweeter all the time. I've been blasting good music through the cab during the day to speed up the break-in time. I can really tell it's working. They are smoothing out and the lows are getting stronger.

Just to follow up on the cab differences...
The current 2x12 open back is the same cab used for the 2x12 combos. It was designed to serve both purposes well, and it does, as you know.
However, the 2x12 cab used for the Z-Wreck was designed specifically for being a speaker cab, and has beefier bracing in places.
They wanted to make sure and not change the cab too much because people (especially Paisley) really like the sound of the current 2x12 open back, but they did want to be able to tune it in exactly the way they wanted it for the Z-Wreck.

Unfortunately, I think the cab will be too close to my existing Z 212 cab with Blues At this point I don't want to pay an equivalent of almost $2000 (taxes and shipping included) for a cab very similar to what I have. Oh well, maybe today I'll get a refund of the deposit on the Z-Wreck and hold out to see what the future holds for the chances of a head only version Keith

Now that more fortunate folks have this fine amp & cab, anymore thoughts on this cab or speaker combination?
I was thinking I might like 2 Golds better, but the more time these speakers get, the better it sounds...not that it ever sounded bad.
Questions, comments, concerns?

I'm really interested in seeing how this cab sounds with the Stangray and compare. On the flip side, I wonder if it would be safe to use the 2x12 blues on the Wreck just to see what the differences are. I'd hate to plug it into the Wreck just to see my blues go up in smoke The Wreck is sitting at home, covered...for now I can't get out of work enough to get her running. So far, she still hasn't been plugged in But she sure looks nice!!

Do amps sound better as they break-in or is it all in the speakers?
This thing is sounding better and better! After 4 weeks of hitting it hard this amps sound is really blossoming! It's lowend is getting BIGGER and top end is sounding even sweeter.
Anybody else noticing this?

Anyone noticing a change as these speakers break in? I was never a huge believer in the speaker break in topic. But, I can say with certainty that it has changed for the better. Sweeter and smoother.
