Hey just wondering about micing my ghia, i was originally going to buy a maz sr., but i'm trying to figure out what would suit me best. I'm usually using my amp for stage volume miced through the p.a system. Which means if i had a maz sr. i probably wouldn't be able to crank it super loud. Would the Ghia be a better option for this. I'm also concerned about getting nice clean tones as well as the overdriven stuff. Can I get nice loud funk or country tones as well as the overdriven stuff?

With PI and speaker swapping/tweaking I think you can get there.

Yeah... what Tele62 said. One mans loud is another mans soft, it's so subjective. The ghia will be enough for some and not for others. The ghia gets gorgeous clean tones and driven tones depending on where you sent the volume control. I like to set my ghia's volume control at the sweet spot where it's on the verge of breakup and use touch for different textures then use a pedal or two for extra boost or OD. If there's a good sound engineer and monitor system stage volume's not been a problem for me as long as my amp is in the mix, your experience may be different. I always want/need my amp in the monitors on a large or outside stage. Keep in mind it's not a 50 or 100 watt stack. Sometimes loud is cool so I have do have a higher wattage amp for those times. Just do it, you won't be sorry. I move so many amps but don't think I'll ever let my ghia go.

Drew,
I haven't posted on here since I sold you the last of my Z's. I miss the Ghia! I might have to get one down the road. Hope it's still kickin.

Both are two very different amps. I have both... a Sr and Ghia. Both sound good mic'd.

...my .02...for loud cleans and the funk&country stuff i'd go with the Maz Sr....IMHO there are some Ghiaesque tones in the Maz Sr...but the Ghia ain't gonna cover the tonal pallete of the Maz...The Ghia is definitely more than a one trick pony but the Maz Sr is a master of disguise and is very well suited to a variety of styles...the Doc himself says it was designed as a Vox/Fender/ Marshall hybrid....

Joe Hey Johnnyrocker, sorry to highjack your thread... Joe yes this is your old ghia and it still kicking. It's a tone monster. Thanks again! Johnnyrocker, Paul G is right they are different amps and both sound good mic'd. You made a good point about "Which means if i had a maz sr. i probably wouldn't be able to crank it super loud." I had a maz sr w/reverb and was a loud amp, if you keep your stage volume low then you probably won't be able to push the output tubes. It's master volume works well. I moved because it was a combo and I prefer a head/cab mix. I want another Maz. You could also check out a Maz Jr for it's versatility and you could push the output tubes harder at a lower stage volume.

With the lower wattage Ghia, you can get the stage sound and volume you want, and then let the FOH guy do the rest for you. Try a Sennheiser 609e flat against the grille.
