As a big Springsteen-fan I like his sharp leadsound (by the way- my Ghia plus Tele is a great combination to come close to his basic sound). I know that he is using a MXR Distortion+. I don´t realy like it becaus I prefere more dynamic pedals. What comes in should come out. That brings me to the question if there is a pedal on the market which can be described as "the better distortion+"...? Thanks for your help!

Not a Springsteen fan and know nothing about his tone, but I seriously doubt that he his using the Distortion+ as a sound added to a clean clean amp. To me that pedal doesn't work that way. It's more of slight boost and some distortion to round out the natural sound. Kinda like the DOD 205 very sought after and the Yngwie pedal DOD 308 that people buy thinking they are getting the Yngwie sound in a pedal. HAHAHAHA Wrong!!!!!

All 3 of those pedals are almost exactly the same thing. 1 or 2 parts different. But no more than any different versions of the MXR Distortion +. The biggest difference is that the earliest ones used Germanium diodes for the clipping. the new ones don't. and that's where you're getting your dirt from....so yeah there is a "small" difference. but not much.
While i've never done a study on Bruce Springsteen, I'm pretty sure asattwanger is right....the distortion + WILL get you some fuzzy nasty distortion like Randy Rhoads...but Springsteen probably uses it like a boost pedal to push the amp further into distortion territory. Then since it's not squashing the signal so much, you still keep a larger percentage of the dynamics.
I've even got a 1974 Bud box version of the Distortion + that I'm putting on the buy/sell, i just haven't got around to it. PM me if you're interested.

Springsteen's tone has changed a lot over the years...in the early days he used those Bassman amps and cranked them! If you watch or listen to some of the stuff from 75-78 there was even some tone changes there in my opinion, In 75 his sound was more dry, more guitar like, you could hear the tele coming through in his tone...in 78 his tone was more saturated in reverb (at least I think so). He would hit a button on the stage and it went from almost no guitar to blistering...watch any vid "Prove it all Night" from that time and you will see/hear what I mean. As of late his gear has always been a mystery as far as effects, amp heads etc. I have heard he used Mesa Boogie amps feeding those 2 Marshall Cabs on stage. As for effects I have no clue what he uses...been trying to figure that all out myself. I have been a long time Bruce-aholic. There's no doubt he gets some of that grind from the amp and then there's something there to push it harder.

I use an MXR III + but it is not a crisp drive, it is more of a compressed saturated drive sound. I like it for some things very much but I would think a Crusak Screamer might be more of the sound you are after, I have the one with fuzz and it never leaves my board Todd
