I just sold my Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special for rent money I loved the amp to death, but it had too much going on. Too many features I didn't need. I was all about that drive channel. So sweet. I've got a hankering for a bare bones amp that I can rip some rock/blues on, and I started thinking of Z. I've been checking out all the amps, and I think I've narrowed it down to the Monza and the Mazerati, and am curious about the differences between the two. The Mazerati might be closer to what I'm looking for, based on the fact that I played my Boogie on the drive channel at 35 watts with a live band. But then again, that had a drive control and a MV. Any thoughts? Anybody with experience with both?

Two completely different animals. The Monza is a darker amp that lives in the midrange and is just loud and high gain all the way. The Mazerati can be tamer and a bit brighter/more musical as well as loud and high gain.

I'm using a Semi Hollow body guitar with humbuckers and it was a perfect pairing with the LSS. I wouldn't call the LSS bright either and I liked it, but I never dimed the gain on the LSS - it was always close, but never fizzy, over the top overdrive. That's not what I need, but I'm not looking for anything light either.

There is a thread in the Mazerati section with some other opinions on comparing the Mazerati and the Monza that you might want to check out.

I shoulda searched. Anyway, I think I got a good answer in that thread. I'm really hoping there's a place around my neck of the woods where I can check both out.

It's always best if you can try them out first. You'll need a Brake Lite for both of them because they are both incredibly loud amps.

A break lite is basically an MV at least Docs are. The Monza is not what I would call Boogie dark. From a pure tone standpoint I think it's alot closer to an LSS than a Mazarati is . I've never owned a Mazerati but I had an LSS for 2 years and currently have a Monza. I also own some other Z's/ I would not call the Monza dark..Maybe compared to say a RXJR but no compared to an LSS. I would call the Mazerati bright compared to the LSS.
