Okay, My Z dealer finally got the red monza combo in stock I've been waiting on, but after reading the Monza comments for a month or so I'm waivering on the Monza now.
I'm really looking for a grab & go Z amp - combo with 10" speaker - something to play some of the smaller clubs without having to haul a head & speaker cab -audiences of 75-100 or so. My bands generally mic the guitar cabs to keep stage volume low. Right now, I'm using my Fender Super Champ XD (loaded with a 10" celestion gold) to cover these gigs (miss my Zs on those nights) with my pedal board for gritty stuff . I have to say I'm generally pleased with the SCXD for what it does - but it's no Z amp. The G10 speaker rocks, though.
Anyway, all the comments about the Monza being really loud have me second-guessing my lust for a Monza. I got rid of my Stang Ray 'cause it was just way too loud for me in the sweet spot and I'm getting the sense that the Monza falls in this camp. my band mates used to complain when I used my SR on "2" (9:00 on the volume knob) - it's one loud mutha.
The only other Zs that are available in a 1X10 combo config (to my knowledge) are the Ghia & the Mini Z. I've been lusting for a ghia and a Z-28 for a while (wish the Z-28 came in a 1X10 combo), but the grit of the 1X10 Monza is where I really want to be. I don't play clean very often & my idea of clean is where the amp is breaking up slightly when you hit the strings hard. In a nutshell, clean tones aren't terribly important.
The Mini Z 1X10 seems like kind of a one trick pony, so I've kind of narrowed it down to a Ghia or Monza. The Monza is probably more up my alley, but loud is not good for how I'm trying to use it and I've "been there done that" with the Stang Ray (which I love - it's just too loud).
The ghia seems a lot more versatile (especially with pedals), but i I couldn't really shed the pedal board going with a ghia as I'd still need some pedals to push it into "hair band" teritory (at reasonable volumes). The Monza would allow me to leave the pedal board at home, so it's probably my preference - I'm just concerned the Monza is another Stang Ray, sounds great but is blisteringly loud.
Any input would be appreciated.
