Just got a used EZG amp. I'm assuming for max clean headroom, the pre should be turned down, and the post should be up? It seems to have a little grit with my humbucker guitars, no matter where I set it. Just not the 50W clean I was expecting. Maybe I need to replace a preamp or power tubes? Maybe a bias adjustment? BTW, where's the info on the bias? I didn't see anything on the website for EZG biasing.
Past comments about the bass are true. It needs to be on, but 8 o'clock on the dial is plenty of bass. I set the mids around 10 and the highs at 9. Not much of any tone controls are needed. The reverb is excellent, no matter where it's set.

Definitely check your tubes, check your bias- I think you can get that from Brent (sales mgr). Also, the type of speaker you are using is very important in regard to tone and headroom with the EZG. What are you using?
I prefer a 2x12 with either greenbacks (25 watt each) or a 4x12 with 75-watt celestions. A good starting point for a strong clean sound, with maybe the smallest amount of hair when digging in (for me at least) is pre and post both around noon and a cut on bass (10 o'clock) and Mid and Treble to taste, usually noon.
If that doesn't sound right, than you might have an issue, but it is hard to say with a used amp.

I agree....clean should be no problem. you can sub an AT7 in there to lower the gain if its too much. def. right on speaker selection... i have arrived at an Avatar Vintage cab, with the opening on the bottom,(supposed to increase the bass-I don;t notice that it does however focus the sound) I am using 2 RedFangs, one with beam blocker, one without.....much better sound than open back....at least with those speakers, have tons of others to try but I like the sound as is right now.... I send my amps back to the Dr. every now and then as needed for a check up, its cheap insurance and if there are upgrades they will install them.....why mess around with the best amps I own to save 100.00? not worth IMHO...... just my 2 cents...

I'm using an open back 2x12 with a pair of Scumbacks. The cab sounds just fine with my Mesa 5:50, which is 50W, 2-6L6. However, they aren't super clean and loud speakers. Think Greenback and G12H30.

I checked the power tubes and they were 31 and 45 mA. Not a very good match at all, and well above the recommended 28-32 range. The bias pot was turned all the way down. While they were SEDs, I can't imagine they were original from the Dr. Anyhow, I replaced them with TADs and biased to 28 and 30 mA. Much better now.

I am not sure openback with 12's are the best way to go at least for me. I have an Avatar vintage 2-12 and switched the panels around to close up the middle I like the sound much better now...more focused and thick.... I am using RedFangs, one with beam blocker one without.....for now I like this...but will be swapping around speakers, cab config etc....looking for a 1-12 cab now...have lots of others but no 1-12....I have a bunch of power tubes hanging around from years of hoarding....some real good ones....will be interesting to see how they do in the amp..... Great amp the EZG.....
