I am looking for a 12" speaker for a custom cab I made. It's open back and I am thinking of a Weber Ceramic 1225. I play a little aggressive southern rock/blues style music mostly. I tried a V30 and it was god but I already have a 2X12 cab with those. This would be something considerably smaller so a big sounding speaker or on the bassy side would not be a bad thing.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!
Pete

Big sounding speaker....Eminence Tonker or Celestion G12 Century neo. I've heard nothing but praise for the Tonker, but I've never used one. I have used the Century and it's a badass with the Z-28. An added bonus is it's very light weight.

I have to agree with UnclePat on the Celestion G12 Century. I bought a used Z cab from with with that speaker in it and I am glad I did. Lots of punch and great low end that does not get flabby. I have not seen much on the boards about this speaker, but to my ear, it sounds great. I stack it with a Z 2-10 and it's a full sound. And as above, the light weight makes its easy to carry to the car at the end of a long night! Jack

Thanks guys. Really hard to test speakers anywhere so it's basically get opinions and give it a try. I never saw those Celestion G12 Century before. Where's the beef..I mean magnet? Do you have any Mp3's with a 28 and that speaker?
it would be cool to hear.
Thanks,
Peter

That speaker came in my then Z-28 1x12 combo that I traded with a guy over at The Gear Page for. Never saw one before that, and I was very skeptical when I saw it. But, proof was in the pudding...it sounded great. I tried several different speakers in that cab in an effort to "dethrone" it, but I always came back to that one. I'd still have it if 1x12's in general weren't so laser beamy. In the small rooms we play that's an issue, and I don't really like beam blockers. The speaker with that Star Trek lookin' neo mag assembly only weighs something like 3 lbs or so. Incredibly light, but very loud and efficient, even more than the heralded Celestion Blue. I've since moved on to 10's, but that speaker impressed me so much that I bought another to use in my Ampeg Jet practice amp. That amp went from so-so to scream with that change, and I gig with it often just to see people's (ok, other guitarists in the room) heads turn. "Fifteen watts?? You gotta be kiddin'!" I thought I might have a recording somewhere with that cab, but I don't. Sorry.

Uncle Pat,
Thanks anyways. I think I may need to go quieter actually. I will be running my Maz in tandem with it. I have a 2X12 cab so this would be my small rig if you will.

nothing original here, but a greenback is pretty proven combo with the z28 for rock and blues.

I got a G12H30 for mine. I wonder how that stacks up compared to a Greenback?

I've used a 1225, a greenback and a H30 with my Z28, and they all sound great. The G12H30 is an awesome speaker for an open back 1X12 because it has more range than the other two. The Greenie is the woodiest and probably distorts the easiest and has the lowest sensitivity if you're trying to control volumes. The 1225 kind of falls in between the two in my experience.

I used a 1x2 z cab with a celestion gold with my z28 head at band rehearsal tonight. Really full sounding. I liked it musch better than my other celestion g30 1x12.

Hey, Pat, is that Celestion Neo as bight sounding as the Jensen Neo? The Jensen gets pretty darned bright, to the point of causing ear fatigue after a time.
