As I posted in another thread, my Z28 rig is getting ordered tomorrow:
Z28 Head & 2x10 cab. Would you run the cab open or closed?
I'd say what kind of music I like, but it wouldn't do much good. I like everything. Paisley to Page to Knopfler to...you get the idea.
What do you think?

Yes open, my 2x12 is closed back and I hate it. The cab that is. The amp is killer. I'm dieing to get a Z-10 cab.

I used mine for the first time last night in a Fender Tonemsater 2X12 closed cabinet. I usually prefer open but I had no complaints!

I like open really well, not so much for any special tonal characteristics but it lets my drummer hear it enough that I don't have to have it in the monitors.

....for general use i prefer an open back...i use a 1-12 combo with a Dr Z 1-12 open back extension cab for bigger clubs and outdoor gigs....if'n i was gigging all the time in good size venues i would maybe prefer the Z-Best closed back....

There seems to be a bit of a consensus for open back. Very cool guys, thanks for the replies!
How much of a volume difference should I expect between closed/open?

Open gives more harmonics and "surrounding" tones, while closed is more focused, directionnal, and with more bottom end. So I'd say : more perceived volume when closed.

I never like my 2x12 I just need it to set my Mesa head on and it was blonde. I 90% of the time pluged into my Weber loaded Fender combo with the Mesa. What I don't care for is the amount of bass it fills up with. It doesn't sound bad, but just bassy. I'm not a big fan of alot bass in my guitar. Funny thing is. I can plug my Mesa straight into a 80's Greenback loaded Marshall 4x12 and it sounds so wonderful. An equal amount of bass and projection tone. The 2x12 cab I have and many others I have played do not make this wonderful balanced sound. I love these 80's cabs and guitars. The amp is a bit loud. DAVE
