Hi everybody, I've got a "new guy" question, I'm hoping you can answer: I really like the tones and the "fire" that the Mazerati GT has, but would like to get an amp that I can control just a little bit more (volume wise, that is) Would the MONZA get me into this "hot gain" area? Maybe with a good O/D or BOOST pedal to help it along? I'm also looking into the GHIA, as I've read here that it has similarities (tone wise) with the GT... As I stated in the Mazerati GT section - I have 2 pedalboards to choose from now, so I've got a lot of good choices for adding or subtracting heat. And in my case, attenuation is "my" choice rather than my only option... thanks very much for your time tbird

The Monza could get you there, although it's somewhat different. It's a bit more Marshall sounding than the somewhat "Vox AC-30 on steriods" sound of the Mazerati GT to my ears.
However, the Monza suffers from the same problem as the GT in regard to controlling volume. It is VERY loud in general and the volume knob does not work like a master volume, say like the SRZ-65 MV.
The Monza would likely need a Brake Lite for volume "control" and the GT definitely would need something if volume is an issue. I would suggest either of those amps with a boost pedal AND a Brake Lite OR a Reeves Custom 18 with power scaling. Cheers!

Thank you "MTLRECORDS" - I appreciate your response. I've got 2 Reinhardt amps, THE 18 / The SHG - both with M/V and power scaling. So as you can tell - Tom likes his gain with two lumps, please... But what you're saying about the control issue is what I was most curious about. I like gain when I want it, but I don't want to have to fight the amp to keep it under control. Or pinch it down everywhere possible and limit it's abilities... Perhaps a GHIA (with pedals), and use the Reinhardt(s) for my heat. Hum... thanks much

Man, if you already have a Reinhardt SHG with power scaling, you should have a great solo (i.e. "heat") sound. It seems like you are looking for a great "rhythm amp" to compliment you SHG. Does that seem right?
If this is the case you could get a Ghia or a MAZ 18 JR NR. These would both be pretty controllable and offer an excellent array of "rhythm guitar" tones. The Monza could be a great rhythm amp too (if you are going for a Marhsall type sound a'la' Billy Gibbons or Angus Young) but again, it is less flexible and very, very loud. Great, great amp though.
No doubt you will have a good time sorting this out. My guess is you will end up with a MAZ 18 Jr NR...

Mtlrecords - you guessed right. I put a 25% deposit on a RED Maz Jr NR w/TBM from Humbucker Music a couple of days ago. They're due in soon, so that'll be my "first" Z... I'm very excited, to say the least... The Reinhardt amps are absolutely amazing -(sorry Doc)- I just like having lots of choices. The lower wattage amps by Dr Z are the ones I'm most interested in. I can see a Ghia in my future also... Dr Z amps are like great b.b.q. : When there's chicken/ribs/links/briskit/potato salad/cole slaw/beans & cornbread - why get just one. There are NO diets here. It's "All you can eat"... t

Ha! I knew it!
Congrats man. Those MAZ Jr. amps have some mojo in them that just seems to work. I have been avoiding buying one for a few years, but it is bound to happen. My 25-watt Zinky (dual EL 84 w/ verb) has been holding down the fort for me in the lower wattage amp camp. But a MAZ Jr is eventually going to replace (well, supplement as I can't seem to let gear go) the Zinky.
And don't feel bad for writing about the Reinhardt. This forum is so great, in part to everyone's acknowledgement that other great companies exist and that, as long as some of the discussion connects us to Z products, really nothing is off limits. I should add that I personally feel no reason to have gear "fidelity" or "monogamy" and that my Jazzmaster sure doesn't care what I plug into, as long as it rips! And I am sure the good Doctor loves not only his creations, but some old Fender, Marshall and Vox amps too!!!
Congrats again and welcome to the club.
One more hypothesis- you will probably get a Brake Lite. I know when I get a MAZ Jr, that I will be purchasing one. If you only play at home, well, you have to get one (assuming you have a spouse or roommates). If you gig out, most likely some of the venues will not be cool with huge stage volume, so you will likely want one too. All part of the quest.

tbird, Great -- you'll love it. mtlrecords is spot on about the Brake Lite. Having one let's you explore what the MAZ offers when the volume and/or masters are cranked while leaving your hearing mostly intact. Mike

I caught the early show on 5/30/70 in Berkeley. What hearing? And a 100,000 miles of motorcycle riding might have helped a little too... Huh? What? I think I'll get the B/L when the amp is ready - thanks guys...

I have been using ear plugs on long rides lately, and we use IEM's on stage now so that helps BTW, I just got a MONZA with the 10in RED FANG and built in Brake Lite, and it smokes. If I would have bought this amp first, I wouldn't own a Carmen Ghia, but the CG is great too.

I started worrying in case I had to sell one of them, which one?? and realised that I just couldn't part with any of them!!! I've gigged the Maz for the last 18 months, and now for smaller gigs, I'm gigging the Ghia - I LOVE that amp too The Maz and Monza are now paired, and I can't WAIT to get them on stage together - phew!! Brake Lites and/or Ear Plugs are a must though. I still want to hear something when I'm old and grey Enjoy! Pete ;D

I never could figure out if it was the bike, or the music that gave me my "ring"... Or which sounded better - a Hog, or a Marshall "in heat"... (?) - ymmv? mine did... But what you're saying Pete, has got me considering both. Stereo is my favorite way... And what you're saying Bikedude, about getting the Monza before the Ghia - might just work better for me. Thanks tommy (tbird) <-my friend Jay gave me that-"I've been nicked!"
