I believe I know the answer to this question and I've seen it asked a million times before but I am hoping I get an answer from the Doc himself to put this to rest once and for all.
Can I SAFELY run one 16ohm speaker in the 8ohm output of the Z28? Up side/down side?
Please ;D DOC?

No worries mate............. I've been doin' it for centuries.......Brent (DrZ sales mgr) says it's all good...... However, he (Brent) says you may lose some bottom, and the amp may break up a little quicker. Personally, I experienced neither with my Galaxie or Ghia while using a 16 ohm cab... Others may opine differently.... Visa vi'.......Your amp is safe running a 16 ohm spkr from the 8 ohm tap.. Rule of thumb.....You can go up (4 into 8/8 into 16) but not down (8 into 4/16 into 8) etc..... Happy wailin'........

That's how I understand it. Thanks! I was just wondering of there are any long term effects but it sounds like no. I plugged my Maz into it and it sounds about the same.

Pete ALWAYS remember you can run a tube amp into a LARGER load and no damage will be done.
You will generate less heat. You will generate less wattage. And your tone will change depending on the speaker might be for the better or worse.
This is all with respect to Ohms Law.
I have a dear friend who use to run a Super reverb ( 4X10 , 2 ohm load) with a 4X10 2 ohm extension cab. The total load was under one ohm, needless to say he went threw 6L6's like candy, overheated his transformer and blew a couple, but boy did the James Gang sound good.
That is the point lowering the load for increased power is BAD long term. Running into a larger load lowers power and sometimes tone suffers.
And oh yes my dear friend was/is Joe Walsh.

Excellent story Doc! He's one of my favorites and always has great tone for sure. Thanks for your response. It's always nice to hear from the horses mouth. Unfortunately now I want to try it myself! (just kidding of course) Pete

Dr Z would be one guy I would love to interview for one of my MBA classes. Just basically asking him how he got started, what it took, how did he locate suppliers and distributers to even work with him when he was unknown. How did he carve out his market and what is his strategy.

I am a bit dense at times and this is one of those times. Following this logic is it safe to say that I can plug my RedFang 8ohm speaker into the 4ohm jack and lower the power>? If this is so and it appears that way from what I am reading, how much will it lower the power and are there any long term effects on either the amp or the speaker? Also, if the 1st gain stage tube is replaces with a lower gain along with the aforementioned configuration it would seem to me that I could increase the headroom in my 28 by a substancial amount?.....does it make any difference as far as different power tubes, some can handle this better than others? I think I got it...

I was thinking the same thing yesterday and I tried the 4 ohm output but I didn't hear much of a difference.
