It's pretty rare these days to see a used one on this Forum, E-bay or The Gear Page. I guess we hang onto them.
I can't imagine what I would replace my Z-28 with, if I did sell it. Some of Doc's new offerings sound enticing, but I couldn't use any more watts, and the tone I get is all I will ever need.

Same here. Since I acquired my Maz Jr, I thought about selling the Z-28 since the Jr's master volume gave it the edge on versatility. But, I can't. The Jr is hard to beat, but that little '28 will still do things the Jr won't. They fight each other for every upcoming gig on who gets to go, and who has to stay home. I guess it's pretty cool I can call either one of these treasures my "back-up amp".

The only reason I sold my Z28 is because I had two (a head and combo). Even though I am digging the Galaxie - love the Z28; the sparkle is great. Sometimes I just leave the pedalboard at home at just send the cord straight in - crazy huh? I still use an Airbrake with it for most the venues we play.

Well I have owned a handful of Z's...MAZ Jr 2x10 combo, a MAZ Jr NR Head w/ ZBest cab, a Route 66, and I happily ended up with the Z-28 2x10 combo. It is BY FAR my favorite Z amp! I've gigged with it twice, once with a Grosh strat and once with a Les Paul Standard. I was blown away each time. Can't wait to gig with the Grosh tele! The surprise to me was the clean tones I coaxed from the thing! I ran the volume at about nine o'clock or even less at times. If I smacked the strings hard it gave me a punchy rock clean-but-not-really-clean tone. And when I backed off on the pick attack it cleaned up beautifully. To my ears it is plenty clean for a funk band but with plenty of punchy semi dirt on hand to rock things up a bit...and I didn't even mention how it eats up pedals like nobody's business! I love it I love it I love it!

z28 is IT baby!
i've got a z28 4x10 combo and z28 head with zbest 2x12.
the other guitarist in my band has a z28 1x12 combo, and a stangray 2x12
we've had route 66, carmen ghia, mazerati, kt-45, mini z, and while all of them sounded great the z28 is just the one that always stuck around.

I am with you guys. I have a Route 66 and Z28. Like them both but the Z28 is my preferred amp. It's almost like Route 66 when it comes down to drive and grit, however, the Route just does not have the sparkle and the cleans of Z28.

I've been looking for a used Z28 head for a while, no luck. I guess I'll have to buy a new one.

Get the new one you can rough it. ;D I'm thinking Z 28 to go along W/ my Rx Jr... SPARKLE CITY. I've been thinking the exact same thing. I just got a Z-28 recently and all my other Dr. Z amps are EL84. As expected the Z-28 has it own thang going for it. I think the Z-28 will compliment the EL84 Zs in a huge way in a dual rig. So I may take it out with my RxJr. or Maz Jr. this weekend.

tuff to answer. It can do the Bakersfield tele type sound, it can do surf...that suprised me...with a ob reverb, it can do classic fender, it can do belive it or not, early marshall/59 bassman sounds, a bit later marshall early plexi tones...it can chime like an ac 30 it just can do a whole lot of things really really well. This amp has wicked cleans and balls to the wall bite, snarl, whatever you want to call it as well. Or you could play back up for Ray Price it can be that smooth.....It just does alot of things, it always sounds good, for whatever reason I believe that it is a Stratocasters dream amp. I think it sounds best with a Strat. I have done the comparisons as I have a USA tele and a LP standard...,they sound great but the Strat stands alone...simply killer tones... I love this amp... I am really considering getting annother just like it to play in stereo. just MHO

damn! You had to say it sounds best with a Strat. I have a tonemaster 2X12 cab loaded with V30's left over from my TM head and this looks like a really good fit. I have this urge to get another Z and I keep looking at this amp for some reason.
Must not keep looking at this site...pay not attention to the tone...go play your Maz...Ah that's better ......for now.

did I mention that with a bit of delay you can get those Hendrix tones, Wind Crys Mary, and with a pedal of choice its "Watchtower"....odd from a "fender" style amp, but they are in there. This amp can sound like a el based amp well enough that you will go "how is that possible?" This amp is not the "swiss army knife" amp the MAZ38 is, but....its no one trick pony either. I give the 38 its due becuase of the master volume, cut control, extra power for clean headroom...but the 28 is second to none in the tone department. Plenty of clean headroom for small/medium gigs....just a great platform to play from.

yeah selling off some stuff to fund one as we speak. My little pawn shop special 6v6 Fender amp has taken over the high dollar 2 channel class A quad el-84 amp recently. Been tossing the Heritage 6v6 model, a couple of Top Hats, and the Bad Cat Classic around and I keep comming back here looking for more info on this Z-28

I've only had my Z28 for a couple of months. I've played Mesa for the last 15 yrs live but the Z has taken over. It's changed my playing as well. Love it!! I'm not normally a gear freak but I could become one if I don't watch out.
What do you guys reckon is the best speaker combination for the Z28. Mine came with a Celestion Vintage30 in open back wide 1x12 cab. These things are like rocking horse manure in the UK so I have only rally heard mine and BW's up close. After seeing him over here I reckon I may be looking to get a MAZ38 sometime soon. It's just a case of deciding which kidney to sell...
