So last night we played a place (restaurant/bar) where with the volume at 9:00 and the Airbrake on the 3rd click thru a Avatar 1-12 with a Hellatone 30 - it was still too loud.
Sounds weird but I placed the hardshell case of my Maz 38 in front of the speaker - about a foot away - and it was perfect.
Maybe a piece of plexiglass is in my future? How many others have to play with that low of volume?

That's where the need for a single ended amp comes into play. I have a nice little 8-10 watt amp that can take either a single EL84, EL34, 6L6 or 6V6, cathode biased. But most drummers would drown me out if they are playing the way I prefer that they do. In a band, less than 15 watts gets rough.

That sounds alot like the kit DIY amp from the "Guitar Amp Handbook?" Was once considering that build instead of an Epi VJ head but I just couldn't talk myself into a printed circuit regardless of the mods. Found a guy in Ontario Canada that builds high gain amps in chassis only form and had him modify it to clean-dirty and 2 boost switces for the gain section. A 3 watter w/a 6AQ5 power tube, solid state rect w/bleed resisor for some sag, and a 6CG7&12BH7 in the preamp. All cascaded. I think it just shipped from Michigan as he confirmed my shipping address on fri. Got my head cab together and edges routed. Got my red tolex and hardware at the ready for when it arrives and I figure out the exact mounting etc.

Well there are many ways to skin that cat. My single ended amp is my own design, and its all hand wired. SS rectifier, medium / high gain (not really metal worthy), and pretty impressive tonal flexibility. But I was trying to avoid making a "sales pitch" here. After all, peopl ecome here because they love Z amps, and there is a single ended Z amp - the Mini Z.

I had just read the guitar amp handbook while I was on vacation the end of June so that rung a bell from the similarities. Anyway sounds like you got as nice rig there. I'm still possibly seeing a mini head in my future. I'm just inpatient I guess for a super performing low wattage rig

Try a Greenback...its quieter than the speaker youre currently using

Thanks everyone for the info on the GreenBack. Sounds like the next logical choice.

Oooh, try the Weber 1225-pre rola (his version of the original Greenback). Vintage tones, a little stouter construction and great sounds!

I suspect that the place you played just wanted you as background music. It is hard to get stage volumes down that low. With your amp on 9 and using the Airbrake I'm sure you could talk over the amount of sound coming from your amp. Get that plexiglass amp shield www.silentsource.com/isoenclosures-clear-a2-4.html if your really have to. It cuts the sound down quite a bit. I use it sometimes when I know volumes will be an issue no matter what I do. The other suggestion about the pre rola Weber greenback 1225 is also very good. I have this speaker and its great.

Its about the same as the greenback, I think its 98 db. I have it right now in one of my Z 1x12 cabs and I can keep the volume way down if needed. With the amp at 12-1 o'clock it starts to cook, but up till then no problem. With the volume down, you would need pedals for dirt and overdrive.

I just ordered a 1225 w/ PreRola treatment. I'll let you know what I think. Thanks.

I promised I'd let you know what I thought, and I finally (4 months later - !!) got around to putting the Weber 1225 into my cab and gigging it and the Z28 head last weekend. I am impressed with this speaker and thoroughly enjoyed using it. It is a tad brighter than my admittedly ancient Greenbacks, but it's brand new and I'm sure it will mellow out with a few hours of use. I would say it's efficiency is roughly the same as a G12H30, slightly more than a Greenback. Another variable is the addition of a beam blocker, something I've never tried before. The idea seems right and I did like the sound.
One interesting characteristic is the way the 1225 fattens up when pushed. I typically turn down for chords and roll up for leads, and this speaker gets very plush and sings when I turn up. It's especially noticeable with slide work.. the notes just hang and hang... it reminds me of descriptions I've read about alnico speakers, although this model has a ceramic magnet.

sudsysul,
That's cool cause I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed the clips of your band and I too do slide work so it sounds like I will be very satisfied with my purchase. I got the same exact speaker. I will be using it in an open back custom (homemade) cabinet. Something light for the small gigs. I'll post my thoughts as well.

Thanks psj1026.. my 1X12 Z bottom is open back also, so I'll bet you'll like it a lot. Please do post your thoughts on it. Gotta keep changing stuff all the time to keep things interesting. Good luck with the new purchase!
