I jumped on another thread asking about Z-28 tones cause I've been thinking about adding one to my stable. I've currently really got all the amps I need including a Rt. 66, Maz Jr., and Ghias, but I grew up on 6V6's so...
Anyway, not that I've seriously shopped around, and I've been getting my Z's new from Fat Sound, but I haven't seen nearly as many used Z-28's for sale as Rt. 66's, Maz's, and Ghias. Why is that? Am I just missing them, or are there not as many Z-28's made? Or are they just that good that owners hold on to them more?

Welcome to the Forum! Z-28's seem to come in waves. There'll be two or three for sale here and on E-Bay and then you won't see any for weeks. I bought my 2-10 combo from a Forum member here. It's the one on the Dr. Z Z-28 sound clip with Greg Lockhart playing his PRS. I bought a pair of Z 10's from a member and built a 2-10 extension cab for outdoor "loud" gigs. I'm extremely thrilled with the amp. It does the "country" tones I need and the "Southern Rock" stuff very well. It'll do blues, but I usually use my Peavey Delta Blues 1-15 for those gigs. The 15" speaker(swapped to an Eminence Big Ben)gives me more versatility. I also use the 2-10 extension cab with that amp.
Sounds like you're seeking a special tone. Maybe the Z-28 will provide that. Good luck!

The Maz Jr/Sr, Ghia, and R66 are/were Z's top amps - have been in production the longest with more on the market than other lines/models.
The Z-28's come up for sale on average about once a month on eBay...more often if you watch other boards like The Gear Page, Harmony Central and here (Z-Forum). But, you have to be pretty dilligent about looking 'cause they go pretty fast when available.
If you're interested in picking one up, you might post a "WTB" thread here and The Gear Page...folks that may be interested in trying something new could be swayed to part with theirs if they know there is a motivated buyer on the market.

Great stuff guys, I think it must be a combination of just being a great amp and supply/demand. I'm not super hot to get one right now, gotta pay for the new guitar first, but I'll be keeping my eyes out and if you guys run across any great deals please PM or email me just in case... Thanks!

This is not an offer, but keep looking...I picked one up and it is a great amp hands down... I play it with an Avatar 2-12 Vintage BB style cab... the 3-12's sound huge...and lots of volume for outdoor stuff or larger venues... sounds great as a 1-12 too, i put a beamblocker on mine and after a bit of listening its still on... cuts some of the sparkle but you can get 95% of it back with the tone knobs and your guitar settings...only "easier on the ears" ..not as "sharp" Well worth the time it takes to hunt one down...when you find one, try this, set the vol around 10/11 oclock, the bass at 10ish and the treble at 3oclock give or take a hair either way... either with a strat or LP or tele...hit those "hard days nite" chords......I know that its a 6V6 and its supposed to sound american, but I have the el amps and the 28 can clang with the big boys...I did swap the rect. for a Mullard I got from Nitehawk55 here on the board...best $$ I have spent on an upgrade that you can really hear right away...you may want to look into that....I put one in my 38 as well....takes great sound a step further...amps have an "alive" feel ...good luck, if I hear of anything I will send it your way.
All I can say is some amps have it some do not , the Z28 has it.

I looked around at used Z-28s for a while, and decided that most of them tend to sell too close to the new price to justify it for me. The Z-28 new from Dr. Z is a killer deal.
Good luck!
