I played an EZG50 again yesterday at my local Dr Z shop. Love the amp everytime I play it.
Sidebar: They got in a Jaz 20/40 2x10 combo so I went to check it out. Liked it, loved the Tremolo and verb, but preferred the EZG50 overall for clean headroom and overall sonic magic for my tonal goals.
I played the EZG50 Head and Z 2x10 convertible cab. It was set up as closed back and I didn't have the time to open it up. In closed back mode, it is a bit bass heavy compared to open back from my recollection.
Wondering which EZG50 most of you guys are loving? Is it the head ...so you can mix and match cabinets?
If Combo, are you guys preferring the EZG50 1x12 or 2x10 combo?
Great, great amp. Definitely meets my 'clean headroom' wants and needs. I don't think I'd ever use the volume it is capable of, but headroom? yeah baby! What a great amp!

Hey! I play Teles thru the EZG50 head paired w/ the Doc's 1x12 cab loaded w/the g12h65, rear baffle removed. It is a huge-sounding amp! I've tried different EQ settings as well as pre- & post settings. I absolutely dig this amp. It does fairly pristine clean, but has so much "meat" to the over-all tone. Again, the Doc's spin on a great Black-face sound. Very cool spin...
I chose the head/cab combination because of weight/ ease of transporting. Plus it gives you options for swapping heads for different sounds (6L6's vs. el84 etc.) Good luck on your quest.

i also have a head because of transporting ease of transporting and experimenting with cabs, for example in the studio... i use it with a bogner 2x12 (1 V30, 1 Greenback), it sounds huge... as big as a 4x12... it has a little too much bass for me and i would love to have a open back cab to see if thats the bogner cab spitting out so much bass, but no cash for that... :-)

I played a Jazz 20/40 Combo last weekend, and then an EZG50 with 2x10 Convertible Cab. Really love the one piece aspect of the Combo, but the schlep/weight factor may still lead me to an EZG50 head/cab. And the head/cab form factor gives me more options down the line if I want to try different cabs to tweak my sound. I simply love combo's. But as soon as I hurt my back lifting a 60lb combo into my SUV, I'm gonna wish I had the head and cab. Things that make me go hmmmm.

I love the head and cab setup with the EZG-50, in part because the head alone is almost 40 lbs. I tend to prefer amps in head form so I am more likely to try different speaker combination's. When I buy combo amps, I tend to be lazy and just go with the internal speaker.
Plus, with the EZG-50, you CAN TRULY get different timbres from different speakers/cabs. Open back cabs tend to be better for my needs though, but a 4x12 Orange or Marshall is great too.
As far as light weight combos go I like the MAZ Jr. (I would love a 1x12 with a Celestion Gold) and I like Carr amps- the Hammerhead Mk II 1x12 and the Artemus 1x12 both weigh so little- under 40 lbs easily. Great grab and go and lots of tones out of any of those light amps.

I run my EZG through the Dr Z 4x10, absoloutely killer combination! A bit weighty but very well worth the effort!
