hi everybody, i just bought a z28 1x12 combo with a celestion greenback in it. really awesome sound, but it breaks up a bit early around 11`. bass and treble are somewhere around 11`-12`depending on the guitar i use. what kind of speaker would you recommend, to reduce the breakup and let i stay a little more in the clean area ? i was thinking about a weber silver bell alnico or ceramic 50W speaker. What do you think about this ? Do you have any other recommendations speakerwise ? any comment appreciated. take care everybody zoppotrump )

Why not try re-biasing to give a little more headroom. It's a cheaper alternative and the greenie and Z-28 are a really nice combination. Other than that, the speakers mentioned I'm sure would work great. I'd be tempted to try a Celestion Gold. If you bought the rig second-hand I would definitely try rebiasing first. I'm sure you could get quite a bit more headroom and also make sure the 5751 is the PI tube and not a 12ax7. Nice acquisition!

I know I'm in tne minority here but I prefer the Z28 with American voiced speakers. Weber 12A or F150's. I like the British voiced speakers more with the Maz and the Ghia (Cele Blue, Blue Dog, or Silver Bell). I assume it's related to the 6V6 vs EL 84 thing but who knows. Just personal preference.

I Have a 112 w/greeback as well, gotta remeber that somewhere around 12 the tone controls appear to start adding gain to those tone registers. Z tone controls aren't like other amps ie fender/vox/marshall, they are very interactive. My amp came withe a 5751 PI, and I can get more headroom with a 12AT7 and less headroom with a 12AX7.
However, the GB is made to break up a little sooner than a lot of speakers. You could look for a a more efficient speaker with around 100 to 102 db.

On the recommendation of JChance I went with the Weber California ceramic speakers to use with my Z-28. I have a 2x10 cabinet and wanted a very clean sound. They sound great.
