Here's a question for all of you Zeniuses (just came up with that, I'm pretty proud of myself). Today, when I fired up my amp for a gig, it turned on fine, but then it started crackling REALLY loud, and I noticed that one of the power tubes was glowing like a lightbulb. OK, sounds like a bad tube right... but then it started smelling like burning electronics. Is that normal? I turned it off, and later checked out the chassis, and I could find no evidence of burnt components, and no smell remained. Could a bad tube simply have gotten so hot that it began to smell? Should I try it with another pair of tubes? Thanks very much for any advice.

I'd contact the Doc to be sure. Good luck.

What Dave said...call the Doc. It could be power or rectifier tube or something else entirely.

Call doc, or take it to a good tech. Do not turn it on again!!! It might be a grid resistor or the like, but no matter how you look at it you will need to get professional help.

Zeniuses! Funny! I always liked the Tom Tom Club's tune, The Zenius Of Love!

Thanks for all of the replies guys. Is the doc usually pretty easy going with warranty issues? I have a great tech in my area, who is a warranty center for many large amp makers (Marshall, Fender, Line 6, most of the big ones), but Dr. Z isn't listed on his website. I'd hate to have to take it 2 hours away when I could get the same service, if not better, right here at home.

I'm in Seattle but if I were 2 hours away from the Doc, I would take it to him without hesitiation (and maybe call ahead to ask about getting a factory tour while I was there). No one will know that amp better than the guys that designed and built it.

I think you may have misunderstood. I am definitely not 2 hours away from the doc. If I was, I would definitely go. Does the doc handle all warranty issues himself? I assumed there were repair centers with which he would honor the warranty.
