Hey all, Just wondering is anyone has been playing around with different tube combo's with their Monza's? Let me know what you've tried? I want to get a spare set of tubes in the near future so just wondering what's been tried? Todd

Have had good luck with Electro Harmonix pre-amp and power tubes in this amp.

So far I like the JJs that came with it just fine. Tried a pair of GT EL84s just for grins; liked them, too.

Put a nos rca in v1 and it glorious. More lows, sweeter highs and plenty of mids. More string definition too.

I use a Telefunken in V1, kept the LPS in the PI and put RFT EL84's in. Also changed the Sovtec rectifier for a BEL NOS one for longevity. I do not like JJECC83S's in any of my amps especially in the V1 position. Dulls it up to my ears and it has always been the same experience across 3 different amps. I have a bunch of NOS and rolled a few in it. I like where its at now. The Telefunken makes it sing. I didn't spend any extra money re-tubing cause I already had them to use.

I ordered a set of tubes from Eurotubes. I have not installed them yet but wanted to have a spare set of tubes on hand so I asked them help me select what they would consider to be a high gain set of tubes for my little red monster, I mean my little red monza Eddie wrote me back right away, made some suggestions for my amp, got my order placed and within two days I had a set of preamp and power tubes in my hands. I had questions about what went were and got several emails within hours. Don't know if I'll like the tubes or not but the service was excellent and the prices were reasonable. I'll get a chance to give it a rip later this week and let you know what I think of the tone. I do think I the telefunken in V1 described above sounds interesting, the amp is a little dark, I do like it that way though, would be interesting to try. I am running my tone control wide open right now with my humbuckers . . . how fun is this?, all these tonal possibilities!! Todd

Alright, I finally got around to installing the high gain tube set that I got from Eurotubes the other day. Observations: Overall I like what I heard but I can't do a good comparision to the factory tubes though because the Sovetek in V2 that came with amp died right away. Break up. Hard to say this amp broke up any sooner or better but the tubes did change the gain. The distortion was a bit smoother, or maybe creamier is a better word to use. I had some more saturation without running everything wide open. I have found that I like everything at noon on this amp and then use the air brake to control my volume. Like I said I had more Saturation and a smoother gain sound which I liked. The trade off was a touch less articulation. I still had good percussion and but my pick attack was dulled a little bit. No big deal when stroking chords but slightly noticible when playing single notes while palm muting. Not an issue at all when soloing and string bending though. I also liked the swell to feedback a bit better. I am going to order up a factory V2 tube and so that I can do some AB work with those. I do love this amp, I like that I can just plug in and let 'er rip without worrying about my pedal board God Bless, Todd

If it isn't broken why waste so much time trying to fix it. I guess some guys would rather tinker than play. Good luck JMHO

The only reason I went with a different tube is because the one that came with it died, I like to tinker and play around with stuff sometimes and as long as I am buying tubes I might as well try something different. I'm a high gain type of guy and so getting a little extra out of it was fun Besides, when you play as poorly as I do its more fun to tinker sometimes lol its all about the tone quest and it sure is fun! I like it when guys here post about different tubes and speakers with their Z-Amps. Sometimes I get curious and I try some of the suggestions myself and while I don't always like the results personally I learn what the simple changes are capable of... I keep notes on the good stuff.
I had a talk over well 10 years ago with Z about tubes and my Maz Jr. and kept notes. He was nice enough to let me ask what were probably "dumb" questions, but he steered me to the point of how fun it could be voicing my Maz Jr and at how much difference that different tubes could make in each section of the amp.
It works for all amps!

Has anyone tried to clean up the Monza with tube changes -- lower gain preamp tubes, phase inverter, etc?
I finally got a chance to try the Monza over the weekend, and it's pretty sweet. It has that round, creamy saturated tone. But I dialed the drive all the way down and it's doesn't clean up, really at all. The Monza seems to start at "More", and go to "Even more"...

It a higher gain amp. A great addition to the Z-Amps line of tone.
