Anyone ever ran a z 28 with 1 blue?
Wondering if the speaker can handle the z 28. Obviously I am not gonna "crank" it on 10, but, I was wondering if I could get that z 28 magic at a lower volume using a blue.

I dont have any "first hand" experience with a blue but everyone says it is a very efficient speaker...ie...LOUD...I think you'd be better suited with a Greenback if you want breakup at lower volumes.

yeah.......good point, I see its a 98 dB rating. My dilemma is I am trying to get a speaker that will work nicely with both the Giah and the z 28. People say the "blue" is a perfect match for the Giah and the g'back is a perfect match for the z 28. It's a choice between those 2 for me and I wanted to make sure that the 2 z8 would not blow the blue if I went that route................
The green back route is sure cheaper.

I think both would be useful. Blue and ghia are great together, but I don't think the blue will handle a Z28 (see the speaker post).
What about a higher wattage alnico, like an EMI Red Fang (30W)?
I find it good (but not quite as good as the blue) with the ghia, and I used it with my Z28 and it sounded good with that one as well. It seems to handle both very well, but with a pretty pronounced speaker breakup at high volumes with the Z28. No cone cry, though.
Tonally its a lot like a blue, with a bit less of the "celestion" upper mid, slightly brighter and more composed low end. Its a bit more hi fi but still has good alnico compression when you push it.
I'm sure the Gold would be fine also, but it might be a bit stiff at 50W for the ghia. And its pretty pricey.

James I'd be tempted to try a Weber 30 watt Alnico Blue Dog for what You need.
Seems to me my Ghia strains the Cele blue a bit when Dimed and the Z/28 I had was WAY louder then the Ghia.
No doubt that the Cele blue/Ghia is the real deal, especially from about 9 to noon on the dial.
One of the Jensen Vintage series may be the ticket to cut volume for you, they are all available in ceramic and alnico, are really affordable, Antique Elctronic supply often has scratch and dent ones even cheaper and the lower power rated ones have pretty low Db ratings.
Myles suggested them to me when I was wanting to cut the volume of my Z/28............whew,
Drop me a PM if you need a link or questions.
Good luck, Curt

Its nowhere near 103 dB. I've A/B it with the blue and its not noticably different, volume wise.

James I'd be tempted to try a Weber 30 watt Alnico Blue Dog for what You need. That might be a good one. Less bright and less volume than the red fang.

This is from one of Ted's Tips of the Day: "For a given input power, the higher the power rating of a particular Weber speaker model, the warmer and smoother it is." I don't know there would be a volume difference.

That's what I get from it. I have a 50w Blue Dog, but I'd like to try a lower wattage one and see if it has a little more top end. Maybe mix the two...

I have a 30 watt Weber Bluedog ceramic in my Deluxe Reverb and love it in that amp. Very full tone but too clean for the Z-28 playing blues. I love the breakup of the Celestion blue, just wish they had it in a 30 watt version. I tried the Z-28 through a 2x12 with Celestion G12H's and it was very full but not enough breakup for me. I just ordered a Celestion greenback to try as a 1x12 and we'll see how it goes.

Has anyone tried a Jensen P12N re-issue or a Jensen NEO-12? I just got a new Z-28 w/Vintage 30 and would like a few options other than Celestions or Webers....thanks
