How important is the choice of the rectifier tube ? Is it a matter of tone or longevity ?
Thanks

Not so much tone IMHO, but as a longevity issue. NOS is better built and will last a longer time. As for tone...hard to say really. But it will make your amp sound better, longer. Kind of takes the tube wear and tear equation down to just your power and preamp tubes.

On my MAZ Jr NR, Route 66 and RXES I have seen a marked difference in tone , response and playabilty between new, NOS and SS rec's, they are fair priced and it's a fun easy experiment, grab a few and try them.

I agree! I've tried 2 NOS rectifier tubes so far, 1 the mislabled Phillips/Sylvania from KCA, and the other is a Mazda branded Mullard that currently resides in my Stingray. Both made my MAZ 38, and Stingray, sound "Beefier". The amp really opens up, and breathes better. All current and voltage in the amp with the exception of filament current go through the Rectifier tube, so even though the tube is not in the signal path, it effects the tone and playability of the amp.

I bought a NOS JAN Philips/Sylvania 5AR4 (mislabeled 5V4GA) from KCA. You can really hear the difference.....and it's a good one !

I just ordered a pair of NOS JAN Phillips/Sylvania 5AR4 from Mike. Can't wait to try them in my Maz 38 Sr Rev,SRZ65 or may be a StingRay.Those should make a big difference in an over all performance, and their longevity should last a long long time.

I would recommend 2 rectifier tubes. NOS JAN Phillips/Sylvania 5AR4 from Mike at KCA NOS tubes, or just buy a Mulllard gz34 from ebay that's in good shape. Both will last probably the life of the amp (almost). The Mullard will be a tighter focused sound, and the Phillips will be a little more spongy and loose. Both are great, just choose by listening and your own preferences.
