Hey Guys, I am new to this forum, but I have been playing a Maz 18, 2-10 W/ reverb for about 7 years. For a long time my band played a lot of country and some rock and roll, but after 22 years that band folded, (a real "fly by night operation"). Recently I joined a new band that plays a lot of Classic Rock and I have been thinking about getting a Z28. In the practice room my favorite amp is a late 50's Deluxe. I use it and a fulltone fulldrive and I can cover lots of ground. Of course the Deluxe is not loud enough to play a gig with, so I am looking for more power with the 6V6 tones. My main guitars are a John Suhr Tele w/ strat pup in middle position and an Anderson Hollow Atom. I have several pedals at my disposal: a Klon, Fulldrive 2, Barber Direct Drive, Delay and a fulltone Tremolo pedal. I also have an Airbrake for quiter gigs. I welcome any input on this and what are the ballpark prices for a used combo. I have also considered a Route 66 but I have always been a combo guy. Thanks

teleplucker: If you like the Deluxe, you'll REALLY like the Z-28! It has such a unique character, and takes some dialing in to fit your personal taste. The two tone controls work normal up to 12:00, then become gain-shaping tools. You can get some really good tones out of it. Lots of guys run them at 3:00, all knobs.
Used combos seem to go for about $1100.00, usually. That's what I paid for my 2003 2-10 combo. There's a 1-12 on E-Bay right now that's only one month old. Heads go for around $900.00. They don't show up very often. Guys seem to keep them. Check: thegearpage.net. If you get one, order a spare EF86 and 5AR4 rectifier tube, just to be sure you're not down for a gig.
Good luck, texas Jim

teleplucker: I played a Z-28 1X12 combo for only a couple minutes and ordered one a short while later, it's a great amp. I got a head and 1X12 ext cab instead of the combo. I like to have the ability to mix and match cabs and I've heard the combo's can vibrate the tubes a little more than a head/cab setup. One important thing you should know about the amp is how well it responds to changes in the Phase Inverter position. 12AX7's, AT7's AU7's, AY7's and 5751's all make a noticable difference in gain. And try a Mullard EF-86 from KCA, it sounds really nice with the Z-28. You'll love this amp! Jason

I also have a MAZ JR 2x10 and was thinking about a Z28. I thought my GAS had passed until I saw this video of Matt Rae posted by richeray...
If you're a Tele player, the Z28 is hard to beat.

Through my trial and error trip through the Z amp line, I think I've found a good stopping point with the Z-28, as goes finding "a keeper". This is the perfect power range for almost any sized gig, it's very light and portable, and the minimalist knob arrangement lets you dial in what you need very quickly.

Well I got the Z28 1 12 combo, it has a British made Greenback speaker. I am very happy with the amp. I did one job, but I couldn't play as loud as I wanted, and I spent most of one day at home alone with the amp. I'm not good with using words to describe sound but the amp does everything I was hoping for and more. I did swap the Sovtek rectifier for a Mullard that I had and I think that was a tonal improvement. The output tubes are Groove Tubes ( 5 I think), I am impressed witht he sound of those also. I guess I will be selling the Maz 18 now, I can't justify keeping both as well as the many other amps that I have. I'd say Christmas came a little early for me this year! Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Teleplucker: If you want to hear that tweed Deluxe come alive and sound like it's got twice the power try a Celestion n-dym magnet speaker. Don't go buy one just because of what I'm saying but if you can hook one of these up to your amp you'll be surprised at the acoustic output.

That's a great speaker. I use one with my Z-28, as well as an Ampeg Jet II reissue. It really let that latter amp become something it wasn't...gig-worthy.
