1st question is about power tubes. Can the amp take 5881`s, 6L6`s, or EL34`s with a bias change? Also, can a 12AX7 be run in the PI slot safely, and how about a 5U4 rectifier to really make this squash and sing down low? Anyone have knowledge or experience with any of the above mentioned? The amp is cool as is, but I always have to play with my new toys through the entire spectrum of what they are capable of for some sick reason, LOL! My curious nature always gets the best of me, although most of the time I go to the original tubes, BUT I just gotta know. Thanks!

You can ask the good Doc, or Myles. But to be safe I would not recommend this. I don't think a 12ax7 even fits in V1. You can swap out V2 to either the stock 5751 or a 12ax7. A lot of this comes down to the load that is placed on the transformer. With some of the power tubes you listed I know the load on your transformer would be higher. I would completely stay away from the El34. Good luck

You can use a 12ax7 in the PI slot with no problem, makes the amp a little more aggressive sounding. If you use a 12ax7 where the ef86 is the amp will not run properly. The amp is a fixed bias amp and does not have heaters for el34's so they are definitely out. The tranny may not be properly designed to allow use of other power tubes even with rebias. I don't have an answer re the recifier, but think it may be doable. The real question is why? If you want the amp to sound entirely different, why buy it? arnieZ

I think you could possibly run 6L6's in the Z28 but I doubt it would have the "charm" it has with 6V6's.
