Hey guys I've owned my Maz Jr 2X10 since 03 and love the amp, but about a year ago I picked up a Marshall 2204, and then had it rewired (PTP) with more gain and more useable tone stack.....
Now I'm kind of wanting something in between but without the EL84 bite/chime thing I get from the Jr. A friend of mine has been looking at 28s and described them, as I've seen in a few other threads, a Plexi/Brown Fender lovechild. The more I think about it the more this appeals to me.
The tone I'm wanting isn't really high gain, but it's pretty overdriven, thick, rich, and has lots of harmonics. I'm wanting a squishy sound, something I can squeeze notes out of like a tube of toothpaste.
I've got a few boost pedals if I need some more grit, but what is the impact in switching the 5751 out for 12AX7 in the gain department?
Thanks guys!

I had like the 8th Maz Jr (1x12) built by Z and I loved this amp. The 2 times I lent it out to friends they purchased one. However, the Z28 is my new rig. I have both a 1x12 (Vintage 30) and 2x10 cabinet that I use depending on the venue. It is a definitely an amp you can squeeze notes out of...I set it so that it is still pretty clean V-1 o'clock, T-12, B - 11 and then use a Fat Boost or FD2 for some extra punch on leads (also have to use an Airbrake in some venues to keep the volume down). You can check out a video from last weekend of a solo with the FD-2 and 1x12 Vintage 30 and pickup in the neck position. This is the 1st solo on the song. Should give you an idea of some of the harmonics. www.houndstoothblues.com/video/

Thanks for the help man! My work comp doesn't have the software, so I'll take a listen this weekend.
I just realized how meandering, and rambling my above post was. LOL

I got a second hand Z28 (like new though), I love the sound of my Ghia but the Z28 is subtly different and delivers a lovely rich sound, not too much break up but coupled with an airbrake I can drive it quite hard without deafening people. I'd be surprised if you don't get on with a Z28.

The Z28 I play with humbuckers gets into Tush, La grange type ZZ top territory. I think it actually gets a bit dirtier than my 66. It's a great overdrive but still quite loud at those levels although I suspect it would take an airbrake nicely. I think you would dig it from your description. Personally I would keep the 5751 in there. I think amps sound better overdriven when they have some headroom, if that makes sense.
