Last night at our country band gig, we decided to let the drummer's 12-year-old son, guitar phenom, sit in for a few tunes. I loaned him my Mexi-Strat, set it to bridge pickup(Bill Lawrence noiseless) and let him play. We did"the Sky is Crying", and "Matchbox", then I hit the Rat pedal, and we did "Sweet Home Alabama". damn! With the Z volume at about "3", and the tones at "12", he wailed, and I heard the most fantastic tone out of that amp! Most all our leads are done with the dobro or pedal steel, so I never get the chance to crank it up like that.
Boy, am I more impressed than ever! He doesn't sound near that good playing thru his multi-effects pedal board that's about three feet wide. I told his dad, 3 KNOBS!

I've got a Z28 coming, this is just what I want to hear! 3 knobs is one up from my Ghia. That's enough, don't want to get too complicated.

I am still floored by the range of tone I get from my Z-28, which just having had a retube (Brimar 6V6's - Derek's reccomendation at Watford Valves) sounds even more gorgeous. My favourite position is everything at 3 oclock, and thats for loud soloing and clean OR hairy clean rhythm at the turn of the guitar volume, and no pedals.
We rehearsed in a small studio on saturday, where I had the volume only on 9 oclock, bass at 3 oclock and with the treble dimed out for top end gain and what floored me was the full rhythm sound with punchiest of bass and sweet highs (yep, with the treble dimed), but oh what sustain for solos with the guitar volume right up. Sublime. This is all with a Strat and Fralin vintage hots. With humbuckers you are well into marshall territory and another new pallette of sound. What an amp.
You wont be disappointed John G!!

Ya gotta love the Z28...I just got a 66 but its definitely not gonna kick the 28 to the curb...I think I will have a use for both of them.

I was fooling around with mine last night, trying to figure out if this is the amp I'd be taking to gig with Friday. It's a pretty small room and I had planned on taking the 15 watter and being done with it...but dammit, I wanted that Z behind me. I usually run this amp with everything on roughly 3PM and it sounds great, if not just a little on the loud side. I ended up with the volume between 8 and 9AM, the bass and treble both on 4PM, with my PRS SE Soapbar plugged in. It did every thing I needed it to do, at a very manageable volume for the room we'll be playing. Those tone controls added just enough gain to make a glorious sound that I could clean up or dirty up with a slight tweak on the guitar volume knob. I had my doubts about it, to be honest. I knew it was a great amp, but I honestly didn't think I could dial it down enough to play it like I wanted to. What an amazing piece of gear.
