hey guys, I'm kinda worried about getting a Z28 and a 212 Z-Best cab because I don't know how loud those 22 watts can get. Can someone reassure me that it is pretty loud. Also can somebody compare other amps loudness to the Z28 and Z-Best.
Thanks, Gavin

whats up gavin...welcome to the forum! this is a great great forum, with tons of very informative users. i have the z best with a carmen ghia head (only 18 watts) my musical situation right now is mostly backing up a female singer who has a very delicate voice.....the ghia z best was way way too loud to even get close to sounding decent with her music....i ended up buying a little blues junor to use for her stuff however, when i play straight up rock and funk with my friends the ghia z best's volume is just right in fitting in the mix i tried a z-28 when i was shopping for an amp and, through the z best it was pretty darn loud, but i guess it depends on your musical situation.....what are you playing right now?

As a comparison I'd think the Z28 & Zbest would be about equal to a 40 watt one 12 amp in acoustic output.

I play alot of rock and blues, but also I love to play more jammy type music like phish or addison groove project. I looking for an amp with great sustain and good overall sound. I'm only worried because I don't know how loud this amp is.

If it's too loud an Air Brake can become your master volume.

My Z-28 through a G12H30 Anniv. can compete with my Super Reverb through CTS AlNiCos when they're both right on the edge of breakup.
I just replaced the above G12H30 with a Scumback M75 which reduced the volume quite a bit. Through a Z-Best with G12H30 _and_ a V30 I would imagine it would be pretty loud. What else are you competing with for volume?

Donati, do you need the amp to stay clean, or do you play with amp overdrive? I've played a gig with the Z28 and Z best with the volume and tones on 11:00. This was a nice small club volume and it stayed nice and clean and I used pedals. Very sweet. I also play in an original trio that is very loud rock for a lot of the gig (we also play very quiet in spots). I had the Z28 and Zbest just about maxed on that gig, 3:00 on all dials. It was loud enough to hang with a 6 foot 5 drummer from hell with the loudest ride and wash you've heard. Just. But that is very loud and the amp is pretty aggressive at that setting. Still cleans up beautifully. If you need clean headroom you may need something a little bigger but it is certainly loud into the Zbest. I think it would be plenty for most applications. I would say it was the same volume as my Rt 66 (which I used for the last set of the same gig, and I certainly didn't need to be louder,) with the settings on around 12:00, maybe the treble a hair more or volume a hair more. I think it's probably about the perfect small to medium club rating. On a larger stage the instuments are usually seperated enough that I'm sure it would be plenty too. I think it's often louder on small/ medium stages than stadium or outdoor stages. When I first wanted to buy the 66, my worry was that it wouldn't be loud enough. I was used to 50 and 100 watt mashalls and 60 watts a side stereo rack rigs. 32 didn't sound like much. I have played very few gigs where I can play the Route 66 and ZBest exactly where I want it due to it being too loud. But I would say the z28 was as loud if not louder than my 60watts a side rack and I don't think I ever played the 50 or 100watters louder on stage than I did the Z28 the other night. There's only one way to REALLY find out! Go for it.

There's only one way to REALLY find out! Go for it. Aint that the truth! I will try to borrow BW's Zbest at some point so I can give a more informed opinion. Donati66, Are you concerned that the Z28/Zbest will be too loud? Not loud enough? If you are worried about being too loud, I'd suggest getting a second cab...maybe a 1/12 with a lower efficiency speaker like a Greenback or Scumback as Tiptone suggested. A Greenback with the Z28 is about as good as it gets tonewise...its a great combination as the GB is less efficient which lets you open the amp up more than the Zbest would.

I would have thought the Z28 was more "Trey Anastasio" than the 66 but hey, the 66 is my favorite amp in the world so I'm not going to question your choice! ;D I just hope I didn't scare you off with the loudness issue. The Z28 is plenty loud with the Zbest.
