Hey guys, seriously can you help me. I have $2000 and I need an amp. I love Trey Anastasio's tone with his sustain and overdrive. I was wondering what amp most resembles a Fender Deluxe Reverb. And how a Z-28 sound with a 1-12 rather than 2-10's.
Thanks, Gavin

Ronnie, just been listening to these clips again. Man, Wild Turkey is some stellar playing! And great Z28 country tone to boot. Now that I have played the 28 I can hear it so clearly in your clips. Great examples.

Welcome aboard, and fine taste in tone.
I think you can come close to Trey's tone with any blackface Fender-ish amp and a tube screamer-ish pedal (or two). That said, you're never going to get the amount of sustain he does with that Languedoc guitar. That thing is built like a big violin.

Yeah i also think the 28 would do ya fine, or even maybe a MAZ, ( 18/38 ) set right, it gets VERY believable fendery sounds. Dont forget that trey also supposedly uses a old grey ROSS compressor to aid his sustain. They're stupid on e-bay these days, but if you can find an old black one, there VERY close in sound, and a lot cheaper. I have one of each, and they're very cool in that there a little different from most compressors, they dont squash down as much as most. In fact they dont work for some looking for that more classic "CLEAN" compression. You can actually use them as a kind of low O/D, that rounds the peaks off nicely, while giving just a little squeeze, with a cool dirt to it ! And i think Analogman has a clone of the grey, availible too.

The tech that customized my Fender 69' BMR into a combo config, with various mods , neg fb control, classic fender on vibrato channel, more JTM45ish on the normal channel; reverb and trem on both...rogers deep cab, 2- vintage 10 celestions...and a few more tricks as well ... in any event, he is the fellow that does/did all Phish;s amps, Treys included...I will not post his contact here without his permission, but if ther is something that you have a question about, I sure can ask him...

Hey fishman, it would mean the world to me if I could ask you some questions about your amp, and the man that modded it. Phish is my all time favorite band, and Trey is seriously a musical genius.
I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Gavin

send your questions and I will forward it to the man....I have the original paperwork that he gave me back with everything that was done, and why....I am not an amp ttech so I can;t give you all the minute "details" but I can tell you this....after he was done, this little 2-10 combo could blow away a BF super Reverb....cause we A/b'd em'......and the neg FB control gives you the ability to "raw" up the sound....also a pentode/triaode switch to cut the power in half....and I passed on this, but a mid control on the normal channel in the low gain imput...the NFB contol is on the back of the chassis where the ext. speaker jack is ....really a great amp....one that I don;t think I will get rid of...can do the deluxe thing, the vibrolux thing, the SR thing....lots of good tones....and without changing power transformers etc....could have dropped a SR trans in there to beef it up some, but after playing it, decided it was not necessary...I do believe that he modded a BF deluxe reverb for Trey and if I can I will get you the list of what he did to it....the guy only works on fenders...and only PTP ones.... if the amp calls for braided yellow wire from 1964, he opens a drawer and ....there it is.. It has the SRV tones already in there....and like I said, a BF SR did not have the tonal qualitys that this little amp does...and the Celestion Vintage 10's, the real ones...sound great.... and as a finishing touch we added a fan!....forest green cab with gold sparkle grill cloth, BF super reverb faceplate, fender logo with tail and POW...the fender amp that never was...

Hey fishman, I really respect that you replied back to my question.
Its its ok, I would like to ask some questions about the guy that did the modding to your amp. - would he do it to a deluxe reverb - is he a cool guy - are his skills in modding reliable - how much did it cost - how does your amp sound - Could he do it for me
Thanks a million fishman, Gavin

Donati66, if the DR is an original I don;t see a problem... he is very cool.... he has done amps for just about everyone that rolls thru here....its what he does.... I have had this amp for 4 years or so, not a blip on the radar...if it does, he fixes it...dead quiet even at full volume....Oh I also have a mod that allows yu to remove the tremolo from the circut for more gain...but this is NOT a high gain amp...just "jacked" up some. I will have to get the reciept, but I think around 350.00 and that included NOS tubes.. Out of all the amps that I have with the exception of my ZZ'z this is the one I would/will/am going to keep....I would have a real hard time selling this amp for less than 3K as there are none like it, and none that sound like it....I had him do one for a friend of mine who had super reverbs, BF twin..etc...they are no more,,,, this little baby put em out....he has the mid control on the normal channel...and 1/2 power switch... I will try and get ahold of him and see what he says....he lives in VT and if you have never been to VT, no place is near to anywhere else and you can;t get there from here you have to start from over there.....strange state....but...very liberal and you can do pretty much whatever you want to as long as you don;t step on anyones toes too hard....so in that respect, along with New Hampshire they are the last hold outs for freedom and individuality thats left in the US....that has nothing to do with amps, just a chance to get a shot at the govt. I will see what I can find out for you....where abouts are you? you would have to ship the chassis if you are not in driving distance.... I will try to get a pic or two of my amp and maybe a sound clip if I can find one...course I could take it to rehearsal and record it....one way or annother I will get something for you....

Thanks fishman, I live in Memphis, Tn... pretty good ways, but I would really be interested in the mods. I really appreciate what your doing, and the time your putting aside. It would be awesome if you could send me some pics of your amp or a sound clip, it would really help me. Dead serious.... I really appreciate all your work.
Thanks, Gavin

I will also toss a clip of my 12 watt Epiphome Comet, original CTS speaker-very raw sounding speaker, I don;t think it was ever doped, or if it was its long gone now.....he did some work on this as well......I think its amazing for an amp I paid 30.00 for....its got trem and reverb on a attached footswitch..ha...for what it is, I like it alot....Mike
