Here's an odd one. I bought a used Z28 about 8-10 months ago. The EF86/V1 position has a rubber sleeve surrounding the bottom half of the tube. The little wire tube retainer fits around the rubber sleeve. I thought maybe thats standard operating procedure because EF86's are prone to microphonics. Is this rubber sleeve normal? I pulled the sleeve off to experiment with another EF86 but couldn't get the sleeve back on. I thought, "I'll just heat it up with a hair dryer and it will get bigger" (because heat expands everything) but it got smaller. Duh, it was heat shrink tubing. The sleeve is not going back on. Thank you for the resounding applause, I'm now taking a bow. Anyway, any of you Z28 guys have heat shrink around you E86? I put the tube back in without the heat shrink and it sounded OK, no microphonics. As I said, the EF86/V1 has a wire tube retainer but the other preamp tube has the metal can type. Is this standard? Thanks for your help.

Neither the Z28 that I play or my Rt 66 have that rubber sleeve. They both just have the wire retainer and the PI (v2) has the metal retainer. cheers.

When I bought mine it came with a rubber sleeve, but it also had a Russian ef86 in it as the stock tube. I got rid of the condom when I went NOS! ArnieZ

Hmmm. The red 28 combo I bought had one of those tube condoms on it, so I left it on for whatever purpose after I went NOS too.

my 66 had the tube condom that fit over the top third of the tube. I never pulled to tube to see the make. The 66 is a 2005 model.

Hi Gents,
I use the heat shrink sleeves on any of my tubes that i use in combo form. I use the black stuff that you can get from Home Despot (depot). I use it is a 1/2" band and it helps keep the tubes under control when you start to push the amp. s
