Looked through the Sounds section for some Z28 clips with Humbuckers but all of the clips seem to be recorded with singles through the 28. Anyone have (or know of) some clips of the 28 with buckers?

I've heard that one tas. There is something that doesn't seem right about those clips to my ears. I assume that you played your brother in laws z28 with your Grosh. Did it sound like the clips on the Pro Guitar site?

Well, not exactly as they are using the 2-12's with Celestian Blues. I think that is probably what doesn't sound quite right. Plus, my Grosh sounds better than a Paul. ;D I'll get around to giving my opinion of it all soon, just short on time at the moment. But it sounded GLORIOUS with the grosh and sounded nice with "Villain"'s strat too. The biggest suprise to me was how much quieter the 4-10 box was compared to the Zbest. Or maybe that should be how loud the Zbest was in comparison to the 4-10.

I'm specifically interested in the tone of the amp & not so much how different cabs sound. In other words, I would like to know if the breakup that I hear in the Pro Guitar clips are accurate for the most part. I realize that cabs will add to or take away from the tone of the amp. Hopefully you can address the "overall tone" of the amp as well as your thoughts on different cabs with the 28.

Sounds fairly accurate to me.
Doesn't sound just like my humbucker guitar, but the Strat clips don't sound just like my Strat either. I really don't think this amp favors a pickup type, I can even switch between them without _having_ to futz with the controls. I do for more optimal tone when I'm at the house but I could get away without doing it on a gig.

Thanks for that Brian. My local Z dealer has a 66 in stock & I may try to get there and give the amp a whirl. I know the 28 & the 66 are different but I'm hoping that I'll be able to get an idea of what the 28 might sound like by playing the 66.
Tas, you've plated them both. What do you think?

Check tas' thread 'Z-28 Workout', he mentions how similar he thinks the Z-28 and 66 are. I've never played a 66 but I've been punishing this 28 for a while now and have been playing/favoring 6V6 amps for a long time.
Honestly, given tas' descriptions in that thread they seem very similar with the main difference between them being the differences usually attributed to the output tubes. KT66s have more mid-girth or body to the sound and the 6V6s have a sparkle to the top end.
I was a little worried about the bottom end when run full out until I got it. I've got no idea how the Doc gets this solid/tight bottom end out of a pair of 6V6s.

Yeah, I read that again & it seems they are both very similar. I'm going to try out the 66 and take into account the 28 has a bit less mids.

Thanks Zane. I saw that clip when you posted it & that's exactly what I was hoping a Paul thru a 28 would sound like.

Prowler, IF you can run a Z/28 with all 3 controls at 3:00 there is not a better Rock tone to be found with 'Buckers...BUT...That is one loud mutha with most speakers. I for one, did not care for my Z/28 unless it was really pushed. A 66 on the other hand, like a ghia, sounds wonderful (but different) and ANY level. YMMV of course.
