Ive been noticing that the Z28 forum isnt very active on a day to day basis. Is the Z28 so good that we dont have much to talk about? It has definitely became my favorite Z.

I played mine for 5 minutes and ordered one a short while later. Sounds great with all my guitars. I use it with my Maz 38 SR and a modded 65 Fender BF Bassman 1X12 combo. Tone to die for. It might be my favorite amp I own.

Yeah, it is ;D Probably one of the most versatile Z amps. Can be tailored to many different styles with speaker choice and pedals. Perhaps the best z amp for classic rock and blues. Three controls, not a whole lot to discuss re settings, just twist knobs and play. Mine sounds so huge thru the Z 4x10 cab it's impossible to believe ti's 22 watts! ArnieZ

So who's using what with/in there Z-28. !0's........12's...........which EF-86.............what Phase Inverter...............NOS tubes. Mine is still stock with the Dario and a 5751 PI. I tried a 12ax7 and found that I like the 5751. It keeps it's Fender flavor that way. I use a 1X12 Z ext cab with a Celestion H30. I love that little cab. Looking to try some different tubes in it in the future.

Mine came with a Greenback but Im currently trying a Private Jack to get that Greenback sound but louder.

Dario Minwatt EF86, GE 5751, stock 6V6s, JAN Phillips 5AR4.
Just switched my Bob Burt open-back 1x12 from an Anniv. G12H30 to a Scumback SA12 M75 Greenback clone. Haven't had a chance to pummel the speaker enough to make a tone report yet but the volume drop was just what I was looking for.

How do you like the Private Jack so far? The jury is still out until it gets broke in...its a little dark at first. Ive also been experimenting with different saddles on my tele so I may have to put everything back the way it was to get a good comparison...dangit, seems like I always do that...instead of changing just one thing, I end up changing 2 or 3 things and then wonder which one was an improvement...DOH!

All stock tubes (Dario EF86). Old style Z 1x12 with G12H30. Sometimes open back 2x12 Z with 2 G12H30's. In my current blues band I've been using a maple topped Hamer Newport with Seth Lover pickups. But the Ghia gets used alot too.

Glad to see you guys Yackin' it up! I'm always lurking auspiciously in the Z28 section looking for a new post! I really think I would dig this amp and find some good use for it.

It's a great amp, it feels like it's a part of me when I'm playing, I've never owned or played an amp that I felt so connected to. Except a RT 66. Tasweigan, you really need to play a Z-28, it would be amazing with your RT 66, seriously. I'm using a Voodoo Labs amp switcher with my amps and I love it, lot's of fun and nice tones using multiple Z's. And you can tell right away when you swap tubes in the 28, big difference between a 12ax7 and a 5751 in the PI position. Just got a bunch of tubes from KCA and Doug's Tubes, should be a fun weekend. The Bassman, SR and 28 are all getting some upgrades.

Come on Taz, suck it up and get a Z28! I was just thinking...with the PJ being more efficient, I may need to switch back to the stock Rect and PI in my Z28..I was having trouble last night getting the breakup I wanted without being too loud(for the other guys that is...it wasnt too loud for me )

Yep, unfortunately for me, the only way I'm gonna get to try one is if I buy one! Could be a while. I agree jwr, I think it would be a killer combination and with a greenback I think I could crank it up in smaller venues on it's own, as opposed to attenuating the heck out of the Rt 66. And I bet with the 5751, there is still enough headroom to get it to clean up nicely with the volume rolled back. Ronnie, I love your 28/greenback tones. I can hear them translating into great classic rock tones with my Grosh Set Neck.

I've played Z28s in the stores and like them a lot. I just happen to be more in a Voxy mode lately than Fendery. Here's something I'd like to hear about. I have a 1961 Brown Fender Super. Plugged into the normal channel it really sounds a lot like I remember the Z28 sounding. I'd like to hear if anyone else has ever compared the two more closely than I have. I know they are quite different amps but they both have that beautiful high end. Too bad Fender didn't use that circuit longer.

I think the 5751 is the right tube for the amp if you want it to beable to do both clean and dirty. It's a loud 22 watts too, volume wise it will keep up with pretty much everything else I have. I don't use it as a clean amp right now, but I think it would surprise a lot of folks as to how loud and clean the amp can be. Myles recommended 12ay7 and 12au7 for different PI for more clean headroom. We need to get you some more sound clips my friend. RT 66 for clean/slightly dirty tones and a Z-28 for dirty sounds would be a blast. I just noticed someone gave me karma, THANK YOU!!!!!

Thanks, back at ya. Do you think the Private Jack is a close match to the Celestion? Does it sound like a Greenback? I'm very interested in the Eminence line of speakers. Billy, I've heard people compare the 28 to a Deluxe. When I use it with my Bassman the sound is just huge, they compliment each other so well. But I'm still learning about the Fender sound.

I don't get the Deluxe Reverb comparison. I've owned two blackface and one silverface. I didn't really like them at all, especially after i scored a nice blackface Vibroluxe Reverb. The Vibroluxe sounds so much better that I sold those Deluxes but I kept the Tweed Deluxes, they are completely different. The Z28 is a much better amp to my ears than the blackface Deluxe Reverbs. The Brown Fender Supers are completely different than other Fenders, older and newer. A Bassman of any year is also it's own thing.

I'm amazed at how different this amp can be depending on how it is set up.
With an Anniv. G12H30 in an open back 1x12, Volume 1-2, Bass 8-9, Treble 12-1 (all settings o'clock) I get about the same volume as my SF Super Reverb when they're both at the edge of breakup.
With a Greenback clone in the same cab, Volume 3, Bass 10-11, Treble 2-3 I get less volume with way more grind. Running the volume up to wide open doesn't get much louder past here, just more of that 6V6 goodness.
My Strat with Vintage Hots and Hamer Studio with Fillmores both sound equally great with these settings, though clearly less headroom with the humbuckers.

I've been running my 1x12 combo with a THD 2x12 cabinet; often running in tandem with either a Germino Masonette or a Swart Atomic Tone, using a ToneBone Amp switcher. I find I use both amps at the same time more often than switching them.

My plan is to run my Maz SR with the clean channel of my bassman and the 28 with the modded plexi side of the bassman. It sounds pretty good so far.

By the way Billy, I've never played a Deluxe so I have no idea!!!! I'm just recently getting interested in the "Fender" sound, and got lot's to learn about what new amp sounds like what old Fender. There's always something new to learn. Do you know of any good web sites that can explain some of this in detail?

The only referrence I have is in my head from owning and playing most of the old Fenders. You can't go wrong with most of the old Fender amps but, really the Zs and other new boutique amps have raised the bar. Fender amps were good and reliable but also meant to be affordable so they weren't taken to the nth degree like new guys do. I'd say that the new Fender reissue amps are about 85% as good as the old amps. You can listen to them and get a good idea. The new tweed amps from Wright, Victoria, etc. sound just as good, or better sometimes, than the original Fender Tweed amps. It'll be 40 years before they get the 'voodoo' that an old tweed has!

You may want to read Myles' comments on the Kendrick 6V6 'tweeds' vs Victoria in the Mini Z forum.

Billy, I've got so much catching up to do! Lot's of amps to play and learn. Thanks Rick I'll go check that out. By the way, I tried a few different PI in my 28 over the weekend. A couple NOS 5751's and a 12ax7LPS and ya know what, the Sovtek 5751 that came in the amp sounded the best to me. A cheap little Sovtek sounded better than a NOS tube. It's funny how that works sometimes isn't it?

Ya , I am really enjoying mine.
I read a lot about getting the tone controls above 3 o'clock but I am really liking running it at low volume and both the tone controls around 11 at home. It is very warm and pleasing to the ear!
