You know, I had been growing away from my Z28. Couldn't explain it. Wasn't giving me a happy.
Realized I've been giggin and beating the original powertubes! i had changed the PI and and EF86 for NOS, but never touched the powertubes.
GC actually HAD GT #5 6v6R in stock! Popped em in, and WOOOOO My baby was back! I forgot how FANTASTIC it sounded, I thought my tastes were changing, um. NO!
Don't forget guys, if you're airbraking it down, you'll wear those tubes out quicker.
Now...should I change the recto tube......

coincidence? I'm about to swap out in mine as well...I'm not seeing/hearing/feeling the response I'm used to, and I do in fact airbrake it. You've convinced me.
I do swap PIs at least every other PT change as a matter of course. It's been a bit tougher because I've taken to a few different ones as tastes dictate, which should in fact extend their lives.

Anyone care to inform an uninformed individual? What does PI refer to? What's the function of the EF86, as opposed to the 5756? Is there a big difference between various power tubes??
My understanding is the two small tubes basically shape the signal, and then the power tubes ramp up the volume. Is that basically correct? THanks

The EF86 is the preamp tube, and has the most effect on the tone. I'm not sure how the Phase inverter really works, but I believe it's the last stage before the power amp, and dictates how the signal is sent.
The EF86 will make you notice the most difference. New production EF86's are absolute shite, so I went (on Myles' Recommendation) to a Dario Miniwatt from KCA. I also went to a balanced phase inverter, a NOS JAN5751. Honestly, I'm not sure I know the difference. Before I used a G12AX7M and that made the amp break up a touch sooner, the 5751 is gives a touch more headroom.
Hopefully someone tha tknows more than I can elaborate.
