Last night I was playing my 66DR.................it had been a while since I fired it up or played anything other than a Z. What I found was a really 1 dimensional tone.....nothing like I remembered...not very good sounding to my ears.......must be that I am used to Z's now and expect more from my amps.............
Anyway, how "slam dunk" is the idea of selling it and getting a z-28 head with a 2 x 10 cab.......especially since I have a z best already and a maz 38 head on order?
I guess its just hard to part with the vintage stuff when you work so hard at acquiring it........the ole blackface is just so sweet looking...........and its a part of my past, but, I cannot see myself playing it anymore........its like I have outgrown it....
Anyone else parted with a blackface and bought a Z?
I am not crazy.....right?

I know Bluzsteel sold all his Supers when he got hiz MAZ Sr.
If you decide to sell the '66 DR drop me a PM or email, I'd like to take to you about it.
Thanks, Curt

It feels to me like the blackface Fenders have pretty much peaked in value. I think they'll still go up but more slowly now. My point is, you could sell it now and not lose that much money in the future. I keep my old ones for fun. I don't care about the money right now. If I had the money it would all disappear after a while and then I'd miss the amps.

I grew up on old Fender amps. Still love them to a degree, but I don't have any right now. Once I got my Z's, I just didn't need them. My Z's can do everything an old Fender can do, and much more. Since getting my MAZ 18 with 2 10's and MAZ 38 with 2 12's, I sold my last two vintage Fenders... A Killer '66 Deluxe Reverb and '68 Pro Reverb. Both were "tricked out" with fresh cap jobs, great tubes, Weber speakers, etc. Still couldn't hang with the Z's.

The bottom line.................the hard fact......the truth, is that they CANNOT hang with the Z's......
So if owning them now for me is only for nostalgia and /or investment, then thats not good enough..................because its all about actually playing and getting your best tone as heard in your head.
Thanks guys for some of the thoughtful replies.........

This thread says something interesting to me: That even though tube amps are old technology they can be made better today than ever before. ;D

I believe amps are better now because the concept isn't so much high volume but high quality. Peavy and Fender can handle the load for big volume, Z and the others are free to improve. Leo wanted good but he never took it to the nth degree that people do now. I think guitars are more functional now, same theory applies.
