Hi,
I'm looking to purchase a z-28 head. I'll probably go the used route off ebay, but have a few questions for the Z28 veterans around here..
Are all z28 heads created equal?? (I know the earlier Mazerati's were dirtier than the current versions, anything like that going on with the Z28's)
Anything else I should know when looking on the used market??
Thanks a bunch for any help - I currently own a Mazerati head, and was considering between it and the z28 at the time. So now that I've got a few pennies saved, I'm going after the Z28.

I really dont have any advice for your specific question...I'll just say your making a fine choice. I love the Z28. I just posted some more Z28 clips over in the Sounds forum.

When they are new, at the store, all the one's i've heard in the last few years sound the same.
In the real world they all sound pretty unique, due to speaker swaps, tube swaps, etc.
The z 28 is a great amp, I don't think you'll regret it.

Thanks everyone. I'm definitely getting one, now it's just picking it out. There are a few on Ebay, a 2x10, a 4x10, and a head. I really just want the head, but their asking 1099, plus shipping. For that price I'll just buy a new one. Thanks all. Kidmag.

Yes,congrats from me as well!
The only thing that stopped me buying that was lack of funds. The one you got was on a 3 day auction and I have some stuff up on Ebay that finishes in 5 days so I didn't have the money to buy it in time. Im not really a 2x10 type of guy but the Doc's speakers are supposed to be awesome so I was willing to take the chance.
Good luck with the amp........I'll just have to wait my turn to do the Ghia- Z28 thing!

Zane, if my ticket had come through on that 1/4 billion dollar power-ball I would have definitely hooked you up. But alas, I must earn these few pennies one by one. Any yew, I got the 3 day auction one - pretty happy about it. The seller has recommended I replace the EF86 w/a NOS tube . So I'll get around to that after playing with the stock set-up for a while. I think the power tubes and the 5751 are also the stock ones. Anyone else a true believer in the NOS EF86's before I commit the $80? Thanks for you good wishes fellas. Can't wait for arrival date....

totally commited to the NOS EF86...I'd wear them as earrings if I could...well, I'd have to pierce my ears a bunch of times and I'd probably look rather ridiculous (that is, more than I already do).....
The GEC strikes me as a touch more aggressive than the Mullard that Mike K has at his site. I'm glad to have both. If the amp has a Dario in it, you're doing all right too, but I'd bet you'll like the "upgrade." That $80 almost becomes a paltry sum when you consider how long you'll be enjoying the tube.

I tried, and like a lot...the Dario Miniwatt EF86 from KCA. It started to go microphonic as I was giving it a pretty good pounding in my '28 (in a 1x12 combo) Mike had some Mullard EF86's a while back. Bought one, and at the same time I went to a head/cab setup. I'm home free. That Mullard is the cat's a$$.

Well, well, well all - it's been about two months. And let me say I am still thoroughly enjoying my Z-28 2x10. For starters, it's beautiful - in great condition, and I feel like I really scored and got an amp from someone who was truley a fan of these Dr Z.'s and took great care of this thing, and really respected the amp when they packet it and sent it to me.
I upgraded the EF86 preamp tube to the GEC, as recommended. Man it sounded great before, but I must say the upgrade did something nice. Not sure what, but I am loving the hair coming off my tone and it feels smooth but with a hint anger - really nice (also it might be the "I just paid $80 for this tube, so dam right it sounds good!!" effect...) but whatever - I'm very happy with it.
It breaks up much earlier than my Mazerati, and has more of mid presence to it. I find I cut through the mix really nicely playing live. The only real bummer is I wish I could run super clean, and click into a more overdriven sound. My favorite big arse fuzz/distortion pedal (DA MOAF, by Baja Tech) doesn't seem to mesh well with the Z-28 when the amp is running hard. But - that is minor. I have a Vodka mod's Boss Ds-1 pedal that just smokes now with z-28 (funny cause it just didn't produce anything special through the Mazerati - but the Mazerati crushes with the DA MOAF).
Anyway, in summary, I am now the proud owner of only 3 amps.. The Mazerati, the Z-28, and a 70's fender champ (for home use). I gotta say these two Dr.Z's are never leaving me. I've bought sold a ton of amps, vintage fenders, marshalls, riveras, etc., but these two are keepers - I'll pass them to my kids (once I have them that is).
By the way, I've made a committment to myself to rewire my Detuned 2x12 cabinet to 4ohms so I can try running the Z through it. I'm really curious to see the difference from the 2x10's..
Alrighty yall - I was waiting for the honey moon to end to right up my findings. But I gotta say, this is definitely a happy marriage and I am VERY happy I took the plunge (how far could I drag that metaphor out??)
Cheers
