My Z28 1/12 combo came with a Greenback in it.
Ive looked at the specs on the Eminence Private Jack as someone in the speaker forum told me it was similar to the Greenback but more efficient(higher SPL rating).
Now Ive found the Eminence Legend GB12 which also claims to be similar to the Greenback and also carries the higher SPL rating.
My reason for considering another speaker is that I have to max the amp out plus run a hot boost in front to keep up with the loud/unmiked gigs we do...so I think a more efficient speaker would allow me to bring the volume down a notch or two and achieve the same apparent volume. I'm looking at "Greenback like" speakers because I dont want to significantly alter the tone of the amp, just make it louder.
Which one would you choose? Other suggestions appreciated as well.

I'm going to offer an alternative that might shock you- I know you said you were after a Greenback-type sound. Trust me- that's normally my thing. My first instinct would be to tell you to get a 50 watt ceramic Weber Blue Dog or Silver bell.
BUT- Have you ever tried a Weber California? I know what you're thinking....LOL But I thought I'd hate them until I put one in the '66 Deluxe Reverb I used to have. Now, what I really dug about the amp with the Cali was the *OVERDRIVEN* tones. Sure, the cleans were great- but I couldn't believe how much bottom thump the Cali gave it.
In other words, don't just think of a Califonia as a "Chet Atkins/Hank Garland" type speaker... They can be quite warm, but will take advantage of an amp's power instead of "choking it" like a Greenback can do.
A Z-28 with a ceramic Cali would be a KILLER tone...
Another option might be the Eminence Tonker, which is the one that Dave (Bluzsteel) raves about. From everything I've read, sounds like a BIG sounding speaker that's darker with tons of "huff."

Well JC, I can try your options pretty easily...I already have a Tonker and a Weber California!
Actually, I pulled the Cali out of my MAz 38 because I thought maybe it was bad and got the Tonker...turns out something was wrong with the amp so it is at the Docs right now getting fixed. I did try the Tonker with the Z28 but only for a few minutes...I thought it had too much low end for that amp but I havent really tried it at gig volumes so I may need to try it again and see what happens as well as trying the Cali.

Mine came with a Celestion Century as a special order from the dealer. I don't think I would have ever ordered such a critter myself, but I've been pleasantly surprised with it. There are so many good choices with Weber and Eminence these days, it's almost hard to go wrong....but don't waste your time with a Signature Alnico. I tried that in my 1-12 Z-28 and it was Putz City. I took it out after 5 minutes of playing....yecch. I also got great sounds from an Eminence Legend GB12 with my Carmen Ghia, but I don't know how that would translate to the '28.

Hey rcrecelius, I have been following your threads about your Z-28, while I am waiting on mine and think holy smokes you guys must play at a pretty good clip! I haven't tried the speakers you mentioned but I do use a Tonker in a 1x12 with my Route 66 and really like that and would recommend you give that another shot as well, especially if you already have one handy. It wouldn't be my first choice for low volume but it really shines the louder things get in a band mix. With the similarities of the two amps I would think it would do well in a Z-28.

Yeah, I guess we do play pretty loud huh?!? I think I'll get some of those custom molded musicians earplugs when I get my tax refund this year! I think some of our necessity for high volume is due to circumstance...the sports bar we play so often, we are backed up in a corner on a small stage(my amp is less than arms length away from me) and since we dont mic the instruments we have to crank it up to get to the other side of the room...the place is usually pretty busy when we play so there are a lot of bodies to soak up the sound. We also run our vocals pretty hot too because we have 3 good singers and 3 part harmony on just about every song. Overall, most musicians that come hear us at this club say it sounds real good and not one of them has ever said it was too loud...occasionally will be told the vocals need more high end but speaker placement in here is far from optimal and its hard to get the vocals to sound perfect in every corner of the room. The other local bar & grill we play is a sound nightmare. The low end rumbles so bad it is almost unbearable yet when you get away from the "stage"(using that term loosely since there isnt a stage at all in this place) its not nearly as bad but overall it is a very "boomy" room. Musicians that hear us here always tell us "needs more highs, needs more highs" but adding highs usually gets us into feedback trouble. Just the thought of playing this room again is making my ears hurt...and Im playing there this coming weekend! EDIT: I just thought I'd add that we have a very considerate bass player so dont blame the boominess on him...he's never been one to play too loud/boomy.

Tonker would sound good in any thing Dave, Does that Tonker loosen up when it breaks in? Mine sounds kinda tight now and I didnt know if it was just the way this speaker was supposed to sound or it just needs to get broke in.

Heck Ive only played a couple gigs with it....I put it in the Sr then realized the Sr needed the Dr's help instead of a speaker so it hasnt been used since. I will try it again in the Z28 in the near future

I should add I am a bit jealous... the places we normally play, we don't get to play anywhere near that level!

Jim Seavall's 'Scumbacks' Southbayampworks.com
They're ridiculously good PRe-Rola celestion clones. I find the SA1275 for the G12H30 tone is stunning. I hate the Celestions Anniversaries, but these are wicked! HE also has a Greenback version that's fantastic too. I run my 2x12's with one of each.
Sorry, just reread, and your really asking about hte Emi's. I liked the PJ. It was very close to a Greenback but more efficient. If you like the green, you'll like the PJ.
I do like the scumbacks best of all, but they aren't as effiecient as the Eminence.

After this past weekend, Im not sure I even want to change speakers...I got an RC Booster in front of the amp now. At first, it didt seem to have as much boost as the Blues Driver but it sounded clearer to me and I didnt have to max the amp out completely(still close tho...3oclock volume, 12-1oclock B and T). Another guitar player friend of mine came out for a couple sets and he said it sounded great...mellow when necessary and growled when it needed to with just the right amount of bite to it...never harsh or piercing.

damn Ronnie, Thats CRANKIN' through a 28 !!!
I can only gig mine (with a V-30) that high on the V knob when both tones are down around 10:00.
These 28's have three volume knobs ya know ?!?!?!? Better'n a master IMO.

d**n Ronnie, Thats CRANKIN' through a 28 !!! We're not a quiet bunch by any means You know, Ive always heard that the V30 was a loud speaker...maybe a Greenback would allow you to crank it more... Those tone controls make me laugh sometimes...if I have the treble about say 12 oclock and I feel like I need more treble, I turn the knob DOWN to get more! I guess turning the konb down causes less saturation in those frequencies.

I've got a Z open back 1X12 cab with a Celestion G12H that I use with my 28. Haven't had it long, but I really like it. Fat low end and nice high's. I don't know if it's the amp I'm in love with or the speaker or both, but I sincerely like this set up. Sounds like a lot of guys are sick of Celestion's, but I like this speaker so far.
