My wife told me that she had intended to get me a guitar this year for Christmas (we don't usually exchange expensive gifts w/ each other for Christmas so we can spend more on the kids). There was a particular SG at a local music store that I had been playing any time we went to that store. She told me she went to get it a few days before Christmas, but it was sold. I had no idea, as she doesn't know anything about guitars, so she usually defers to me to get my own stuff. She was real bummed out about this as it was a time where she could have actually surprised me. Over the last couple of days she's been "twisting my arm" to get me to tell her something else I want for a late Christmas gift.
Well, she just bought me a Delta 88!
I've been reading about these things for a while, and I've been quite intrigued. I'm an old Marshall Major sound fan (Blackmore, Ronson, Frusciante, etc.). And from what I've read from Myles and others on these pages, this beast seems like it will fit the bill.
I pick 'er up Saturday morning. I can't wait. Two days I will suffer... ;D
I have two cabs (or a combo of a few) that I believe I can safely use w/ this beast. I have the stock Marshall 1936 (150 watts) and the Z Convertible 2X10. I figure I could also put my two other 1X12 Z Convertibles together safely w/ this amp. The Vin 30 and G12-65 ought to sound good.
Do any of you Delta 88 owners regularly use your amp for great Classic Rock tones? Does the 3-3-3 setting apply to the 88 as it does on the Z-28 and 66?
Somebody please tell me a Delta 88 story! I've read every post in this section multiple times, and I need more to get me through the next two days! ;D

Was this the black one on Ebay?? Great price you got if it was! I almost bought it and I already have one!! That'd be the one! When I checked it out, I was surprised it was from Western PA (and thirty minutes from my house!). I did some email exchanges w/ the seller and liked what he had to say. I let it get re-listed twice for a $50 drop each time, and he refunded another $50 since I'd do local pick-up. I thought about letting it go for another re-list, but I didn't want to lose it. I pick 'er up tomorrow morning!

Good thing you didn't wait - I would have had to buy it! Came real close to pulling the trigger It was tough waiting as long as I did. I was surprised it got down to $1299 w/ so few made. Mike, what speakers are you running yours through? Are you using the EVHIII 4X12? This guy has a Marshall 1960AX for sale too that he said he'd give me a good deal on (as he used it w/ the Delta and has no need for it now that the Delta is sold). I was thinking a quad of greenies would sound pretty good (until the Delta fried 'em!). Isn't the EVHIII only an 80 watt cab? W/ a peak of 120-130 watts, I'm leary of a sub-100 watt cab w/ the Delta.

I'm playing it through a 4x12 Marshall 1960 A cabinet which will handle 300 watts - not too worried there! The EVH amp is 100 watter and the speakers are rated at 100 watts. Unless you were really cranking it I wouldn't think it would be an issue.

Well, I picked 'er up and had 'er back to my house by 11:00. I ran it through my Z Convertible 2X10. It sounded great through that cab. As the family was home, I kept it attenuated, although I did run it up through the various attenuation levels just to hear what she can do. Just w/ a little bit of playing, I'm digging this thing more than my SRZ. It's got a much fatter bottom end. It's darker than the SRZ, too, which I like. It has that percussive feel to it (I guess from the EF86 front-end) kinda like my RXJr. And although it's got a fat bottom, it's very tight and quick. It has great cleans and some amazing dirt. W/ 'buckers, this thing gets nice hair at around 9:00. I'm really impressed. Her # is P. 19021. I believe she was owned by a Forum Member prior to being sold to the guy I got her from. Here's a pic or two: This one is w/ a new-to-me PRS (the cab in the photo is one of the Traci Guns cabs that had the 20th Anniversary Badges): I can't wait until Wednesday's band rehearsal to run 'er through 'er paces.

I was messing w/ her some more this morning. I paired the Z 2X10 w/ a Z 1X12 loaded w/ a Heritage G12-65. It sounded quite spectacular. It looked pretty cool too... Check out the lamp... The purple matches the PRS! It must have been fate!

Congrats Rich. The Delta is my favorite Z by far. It's so easy to get great tone, even at lower volumes. (especially with a brake)

I wonder what the bias is set at.... I've got mine at 50mA, but it's cleaner and believe it or not, louder that way. The "stock" 30-something mA that Z shipped 'em with is crunchier (more crossover distortion).
Yours looks just like Myles' old #00006! I love my red/s&p but the black/black would have been my first choice! Congrats!!!!
