Is there any test data on the KT-66's yet?
(that thread only had EF-86 data)

I am just wrapping up testing on these. Aspen Pittman brought some back from the JJ factory directly from the Europe show last week. I have been testing them. So far they are fair. They look very much like the KT88 ... same plate structure, bottle shape and may just be little more than a KT88 with a different cathode and some internals. They do not have the smooth curves of a GEC and are not as smooth or linear as the KT66C or KT66HP. But ... in the end, specs and curves are the small part of the picture. Tone is the big part of things. Sonically they do not sound like the KT66s mentioned above. They do sound nice though so in the end some folks may think they sound even better. It is not a better or worse thing ... they sound different. On the big plus side ... if they are anything like the JJ KT88 they will be less physically fragile than the KT66 C, HP, or GEC. They are also a strong tube. At higher -voltage by 1/2 a volt on pin 5 they are typically looking to be the strongest of the KT66s. This could also be an advantage for some folks. When I am done with my tests I will post the measured specs but for now this is a bit of a heads up and a bit of hope for those that use the KT66 tube as it gives one more option. On the subject of KT66s .... Sovtek offers a metal based KT66. Watch out for this one ... it is not a good sounding tube, sort of an overblown 6L6 with some quirky aspects. On the discontinued KT66HP ... The Tube Store seems to have some of these from Saratov. They look like old stock from the date code on the picture but this older date code means nothing bad at all. If you follow the below link you can click on their photo for a large version. These were made off GT tooling and were supposed to be an exclusive tube but over the years it seemed that the Russian factory would throw boxes of GT stuff out the back door and they ended up on the "black market". Not much could be done about it then, and even less can be done about it now. In any case ... if you want real HPs .... The Tube Store seems to have them and they have a good price considering the supply is gone. thetubestore.com/saratovkt66.htmlDoug Preston ( www.dougstubes.com ) also has some of these www.dougstubes.com/58816l6.htmat $49.00 a matched duet.

Yeah I got a pair of those from the Tube Store and they work and sound great ... if you like their sound that is, I do prefer the Shuguangs though ... looking forward to checking out the JJ KT66, thanks Myles!

the only thing that has kept me from getting a used route 66 ( one was offered to me from fat sound in green tolex, wow) is the availability of kt66 power tubes. the whole tube world is a crap shoot it seems, unless you tie in with good vendors,, and they are there, i buy from doug and bob at eurotubes,, also groovetubes.. myles, you set me up with a great sag preamp tube for my 6545 i sold to dan weller in KC,, i have a 97 prescription head that doc z set up with the newer tung sol 12ax7s, any mods or different preamp tube you have used in your older RX to get a different tone? i know some one has talked about using a 12ay7 and a 12at7 somehwere on here, for a tweedier tone, but i cant find it...

iggs , what do you not like about the HP's ? They sound a bit too dark, compressed and "woody" for my taste ... specifically with HB's and I can't seem to dial it out, not so bad with single coils. The C's are a bit brighter and more open sounding, they seem to crunch nicer as well. Just personal preference I guess.
