Ok, so I got my 66 on Friday, but had an out of town gig that I didn't want to take it on. Mainly because it was with an artist I haven't played with before, and I just thought it would be awkward to take a brand new amp head that I've never even plugged in to and try to do the gig. So I went the safe route (pun intended) and took along my trusty new MAZ 38 NR head.
So Saturday night, I was playing with the same band in Nashville, and since I felt a little more comfortable after doing a gig with them, the 66 was getting it's first test run.
I have to say, I was a little shocked when I first plugged in. It has such a different vibe than a cleaner, brighter type amp like the mostly Fenders & Voxes I've grown up around.
But after a couple of songs, and starting to get used to the feel & the gawdy thickness of the thing, I was hooked.
I wasn't able to crank it, as it was a smallish club with a stage that had just enough room for the band. But I had the volume on about 11:00, so it was enough to at least have the power amp "on." Keep in mind, I always use a volume pedal...because 11:00 is still fairly loud, especially when you step on a dirt box.
As I suspected, I immediately fell in love. This truly is the "better mousetrap" JTM 45. It's the best OLD Marshall sound I've ever heard, and worked great with a band that was doing more of modern country/pop thing with some classic rock tunes thrown in.
I took my new shorty Z cabinet and threw my new 50 watt Weber alnico Blue in there. Very nice match with the 66.
I did a few quick clips today with an Eminence Tonker, and am going to do a bunch more during the week to update my soundclick page. Check for the new clips in the Sounds forum..
I can tell me & the 66 are going to get along just fine... ;D
