So after having one on the radar for a while, I've got a Route 66 on order. I'm stoked. Have decided to go to heads & cabs, so I think the 66 will be a nice contrast to a MAZ 38 head for getting different sounds. Should be fun to use when I get out of the "country box." I've got a couple of rock/pop oriented bands I play with quite a bit, as well as a really good blues singer. Those are my "fun" gigs, so the Route 66 will get some good use. Looks like I'm going to use a 1 12" Weber cabinet with a 50 watt alnico Blue Dog for studio & clubs, and a 2 12" with Blue/Silver for gigs where I need more. Should be cool...

Your so silly...and how long has this GAS been festering? Guess your gonna have to change your avatar. You get a nice flight case for the 66 and you can take with you on your fly dates

Best amp for Blues I've ever used. I use it on a lot of blues gigs just clean don't even use my Reverb unit. Just old school guitar and amp. I think your going to like it, especially with the Blues singer. Sometimes takes time to get used to the active controls they are not like normal ones you have to play around with them and most have a Vol. sweet spot at around 1:00. Welcome to the club!

Not that I have a lot of experience with different amps, but I think the Route 66 is one of the best multi purpose rock amps out there. So if you're going outside the country box, it's great. I really prefer it with humbuckers for 'outside the country' box.

With humbuckers and just slightly above unity gain on my blackfinger compressor level, all knobs at 3:00, I can get deep into santana territory. This amp is amazingly versatile. Run the level up a bit more, same amp settings I'm in EVH-land. Roll back the level to unity and back off the treb/bass to noon with my strat and it's srv time. I love my 66.

I also use a Route 66 and Maz38 set-up. The two amps really sound nice with each other. I love it and couldn't ask for more. Well I always want more...you know what I mean!!
Have fun Bill (bilbal)

Last night I was chatting with a fellow guitarist and mentioned that I had a route 66 and his response was "oh man do you ever stop playing?"

I just bought a Route 66 from Ronnie Crecelius. Nice amp! I'm currently adjusting my head to it's sound. It always takes a while for me. First impressions are it's a savage beast! Very loud for 32 watts. It's not really dark but it's not shimmery bright like the EL84 Zs and a Z28 also has more sparkle. It does have nice soft sag and bloom. I could see this being a great blues band amp. It sounds better with my Anderson guitar, which is very bright, than it does with my Lentz. Two things I would like to change about it: 1) Get it to play cleaner at lower volumes 2) Get rid of the ghost notes (they mostly occur from about E flat to G, around the high open E string range) From what I've read it may be the bias needs to be a little colder. In other threads that was suggsted to clear up both issues. I read in an old thread that Ronnie said he had it biased at 38 so I'll need to get a bias probe and back it down to the 32 range and see what happens. I'm also going to get with KCANOS tubes about getting different EF86 and PI tube with these goals in mind. I need a few other tubes for some other amps anyway.

Hey Bill, I think I left an extra PI tube in there ziptied to the inside of the screen...if so it is the original PI(or at least it was the one in there when I got it). You might try it out or...pull the 5751 PI out of your Ghia and try it in the 66 just for kicks(pun intended ) About those ghost notes...I too noticed them when playing on the neck pickup but since I play mostly on the bridge it wasnt as noticeable to me.

I tried it with a 12AY7 in the PI and the ghosties were still there. I'll be piddling around with it. I don't need it to gig right now so no rushing.

You won't hear the "ghost" at gig volumes with a full band...well at least I don't, but my ears are pretty much shot.

I ordered some new tubes from Mike at KCA today. Just spares and odds and ends. That made me want to try something when I got home. I pulled out the EF86 in the Route 66 and it was a Dario. I pulled the one out of my Stang ray and it was a Dario too, but in the Rte 66 it was cleaner playing than the one that came in it. Who knows why? Now it plays as clean as a 32 watt amp ought to. Still have the ghosties though but they're really not too bad at all. We came up with a last minute thursday night gig at Knuckleheads this week so I'll either bring the Rte or my old Vibrolux, or an old tweed Bassman, or my Ghia - nah, probably the Rte 66. This'll be a fun place to run the Rte. KCs best live music club although it'll probably be pretty dead on a Thursday.

This amp WILL do jazz clean to the limits of 32 watts anyway. Put the treble on about 9:00, bass on about 8:00, volume at about 1:00. Now that's pretty loud and clean but still very thick. The bloom on this amp is the most I've ever heard an amp do, more than a 'Ray even. It's like a slow compressor opening up. Amazing for a fixed bias amp. Curt: Ain't it funny that I've ended up with two of your cast-offs! I think you made a mistake to let either go!

I'm not disappointed with ghost notes, they make me feel that my amp is alive, with all its richness in tone and compression. And when you play with someone g n disappear.

Hey Billy, does this mean you now have 41 amps? If so, you're going to have to pickup 2 more guitars to keep the ratio the same.
Well, that makes 3 R66's that I'm aware of in KC. I'm sure there are more. Think I'll start another thread and find out...

Welcome to the 66 club! Any cab will do...4, 8 or 16 ohms, but I really like mine with a 4x10 Z Cab.
