Hi there all, What is in your opinion the best delay pedal to use with the Route 66, I currently use a Boss DD-5 but always in the effect loop. Since the 66 has not effect loop I was wondering if there is a specific brand that would work well in front of this amp. Thanks in advance

I use the Boss DD-20 in front of my 66 to great success - easy pedal, great sounds, lots of versatility and options. Before my Z days, I was hung up on the effects loop thing, but now I can't imagine not putting the delay in front. I really like that extra bit of amp sound that in-front echoes pick up - and because Z's are so touch/dynamically sensitive the echoes aren't even all that overdriven even with the amp cranked because they drop in volume so much after the initial attack...all in all, a very organic sound.

Most pedals sound good infront of the Rt 66. The Maxon dd9999 is pretty sweet. For OD you should also try a Menatone Ms Foxy Brown.

If you want BEST...I use the Fulltone TTE. (IMO) Close would be a Maxon AD80 or Maxon 999999999999......

If you want BEST...I use the Fulltone TTE. (IMO) Close would be a Maxon AD80 or Maxon 999999999999...... I use a vintage Ibanez AD 80 (the one the Maxon is trying to emulate) It's great but the TTE would be awesome as would a Toneczar Echoczar.

TTE is something exxxxtra.... I'm happy with my T-REX Replica, nice tone (even if a little compressed with distorted sounds when the pedal's on), nice features expecially Tap Tempo, very important to set right delay-on-time.

Tas, I happen to have an old Ibanez AD 80 too, but haven't used in ages...I recall that mine had only one setting usable. I have to take it out clean the dust and try again sometimes

Nice pedal to have stored away, they are very sought after by collecters. People pay a fortune for the analog chip inside those too. It works wonderfully with the 66 especially if you use it at 18 volts like you are supposed to. Very warm. Of course with those old vintage analog chips the delay time only goes to 300ms, but what a tone. Closest pedal I have heard to a tape echo but I haven't heard the echoczar. I'd love to compare it to the Maxon to see how close they really are, since they are "supposed" to be the same.

For a great vintage analog delay on a bargain budget, i love my Ibanez AD99!! A little limited with the short delay times as most analogs are, but really neat tones out of it. Not too murky, like some others of that era, just nice and warm. It seems to have a pretty clean by-pass as well when its off. It does have just a little coloration to the tone when on though, as ya would expect with analog, but its overall quite nice regardless off the fact you can probably still pick one up for around $100.00 ? I dont use effects much, so it fits the bill for me as an occasional spice.

The Keeley modded Boss DD-3 is a great pedal. It has a 3 way toggle switch that goes from a totally digital unmodded repeat, to two modes of an analog decay. The most analog of the 3,which is where the switch is pointed set at its most right position, sounds excellent. Although the Fulltone TTE is amazing, the Keeley for under $200 is the best I've heard. I played it for a friend who promplty ordered one from Keeley.

With the Route 66, which would you recommend between the Maxon 999 and the T Rex Replica? The Fulltone TTE looks great but seems pretty expensive. Thanks. John

Didn't try Maxon unit, and don't know the price (T-Rex is a little expensive) it depends by the way you use it: If you want some fast delay only to add body and ambient to your sound I think Maxon could be nice. I use delay to make delay be heard, expecially in solos or in some clean ballads, so a foundamental feature to me is tap tempo. I love my delayed note coming in time with tempo... and many guys asked me how it was possible without digital presets, expecially with drummers that run without metronome. That's the little secret, and you can tap with the unit turned off

The Maxon and the T Rex are both around $350. I was curious about the importance of the tap tempo feature so I appreciate your comments. Thanks. John

I use a Boss DD-3 with my 66 and it sounds fine....although, I would like to eventually upgrade to a Diamond Memory Lane.

I don't know about "the best" since that's so subjective, but I really like my Memory Lane. Tap tempo is great to have and it sounds amazing. It is NOT a super clean delay and it does have some artifacts in the longer repeats BUT ... that's why I like it! Deep, warm and analog. The EQ works fantastic and the switchable modulation is great for those warbly tape echo sounds.

For me the best is the maxon AD999, i tried the memory lane cause i wanted tap tempo but it doesn't sound as warm and organic......seriously the maxon is the one. The ad80 is also cool and for modulation i use a Jacques "prisoner".

My T Rex Replica is sounding so good with my 66 that I find myself leaving it on all the time and just adjusting the levels based on the sound that I am after. Do any of you other guys leave your delay on.

Me too, in solos expecially. I keep the mix knob at 11:00, so when it is engaged you hear it... I find that in live situation you must keep it a little louder than at practice situation, it happens to disappear thru the mix
