Hey guys, I've been looking at many different Z amps but came down with a 212 Z-Best cab and a Route 66 Head with a Wooden faceplate.
Could you guys post some pics of your amps and your setup.
Thanks, Gavin

So what exactly do you think "stunk" about the amp? Were you looking for more gain? That's a pretty heavy statement to make about one of the greatest amps of all time for vintage rock and blues. Buying second hand you never know what you're getting as far as bias, valve condition, mistreatment etc etc. The amp you received may not be in good condition. But more than likely it's ok. Having said that, the 66 is about vintage tone and that may be not what you are after. The only other guy I know who thought the amp stunk was trying to find a high gain Boogie style amp to play Alan Holdsworth legato lines and thought the amp would do that. Jimmy Page? yes. Alan Holdsworth, or any higher gain, not without a pedal.

Very true. In fairness to the 66 though, there is a difference between not being your thing and saying it sticks! I think alot of people think they will be able to shred on the 66 and it's just not that sort of amp. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Mesa Boogie amp. Give me a good one and I'll play 80's rock till the cow comes home! Toto Isolation, or anything by Night Ranger...Oh YEAH. George Lynch... It's just not the tones I'm going for personally in my own music.

I'm afraid "Marshall" used anywhere in an amps description makes many folks thing "Gain" and not the earlier Bassman derived JTM-45 tones the 66 produces.
But to say a Route 66 Stinks is well, uninformed as it is a great future classic as many of us here understand.
I'm with Taz, It may not be what you felt it would or should be, but they do not "stink".
I LOVE mine as does all who hear it, I played several multi band shows over the long weekend and the others pickers ALL positivly commented on my tone. The 66 works very well with a single Weber Blue Dog IMO.

Man..............don't "dis..." the Rt66. We all respect each other's opinions here and specific tonal interests.............Just say it did not work for you. ..AND........please share what you did not like about it! Too many of us love this very special amp to just let a blanket statement like the 66 STINKS be thrown out there in isolation from any reasons why.
BTW.........When I went to order my screamin' eagle from avatar, they talked me out of it..............so what I think I am gonna do is hold out for the Celestion Gold.........figure I can scrounge up the $ by the time it eventually is available. I bet that speaker will sound killer with the 66.

I'm sorry he didn't like it. He should have expressed it a little differently too. He was probably having a bad case of buyer's remorse that caused the negativity. I would also like to know what music he plays, what amps he likes and what he expected the Route 66 to do. Sometimes people get in their head a notion about a certain amp and don't really pay attention to what they read. He may have fallen into that little trap and fooled himself. There are ample discriptions of the 66's tone here and on the Dr Z amp page so there really isn't much excuse for buying the wrong amp but if he'll give us more info we might be able to steer him in the right direction. His amp has great resale so he shouldn't suffer much financially. Sell it on the forum here would be better than ebay, or consign it at a local store, or trade it in. Z's aren't well known enough for ebay, IMO. I'd love to have a 66, as would everyone else on here. I agree that it is a classic for what it is. It's not a triple rectum fire or Slash Marshall but nobody said it was. It is it's own thing. I don't hear the JTM45 analogy either but that may be just me needing some more time with one.

I'm beginning to think spending money on various cabs and speakers is the way to go. It changes the amp so much. I reckon I could have various "amps" with different speakers and the good ol' route 66. Voxey, go the blues or gold bassman go the 4-10 or 2-10, British, go the 4-12 or Z best! Too easy and cheaper than a whole lot of amps!

Wow, harsh choice of words there.. I ended up selling my 66 after a few months - and now I'm happier than can be with my Mazerati - but I *certainly* wouldn't say the 66 stinks! Just wasn't what I was looking for.. and there are definately times I wish I still had it - hell, one day I may own another!
Wasn't this the guy who was looking for a "Trey Anastasio" type of sound? Out of any of the Z's I would think the Z-28 would come the closest to that.. definately not 66 territory IMO. Just because an amp isn't what you're looking for is no reason to go saying it's no good.

A Maz jr might be perfect for the Trey tone, at least as far as the amp goes. There's a lot more to his sound than the amp. Languedoc-type guitar and all the right pedals are equally as important.

Billy, The 66 reminds me quite a bit of the '67 Bassman head I gigged for quite awhile. Not spot on, but the vibe, fullness and great platform for stomp boxes as desired.
JMO, YMMV, etc.
