He's 16, and the lead guitarist in a high school rock band. Watched them yesterday afternoon at an outdoor event, and they've got it goin' on...really a fine show. So today he tells me he and the other guitarist want Dr Z's. They're using solid state Marshall and Crates with 4x12 cabs, so I suggested the Rt 66 with a good OD pedal and viola!...that's now on their radar screen. Maybe dad can help make this happen a little sooner It's great to see the young up-and-comers inspired by good amps and tone.

Madison, I'm not in high school but I really want a Rt 66, too. Do you need another son?

Madi..my 13 year old son is always trying to take my Z28 to his gigs. He is currently using a 68 Fender Princeton that "Dad" picked up for him last year. I think it is cool when they can hear good tone and want to play the Z amps. A lot of young players around here have that overprocessed buzzy tone that makes me cringe!

But yes, the guitars were a little buzzy, and as I listened I imagined them with some decent sounding tube amps. Then the next day he tells me he wants a Dr Z. I think for his music the 66 or 6545 would be a good choice. Or even SRZ 65 if you can find one. AND of course a cabinet with some good speakers.

Madison.....Yeah....c'mon....give the youths a hand. My son turned 18 today and he played a 5 minute Blues-Shuffle-Solo (Pride-n-Joy type of thing) five years ago (7th Grade) at school in a large Gym through his Rt. 66.....in front of 600 people! I can remember it like it was yesterday.....His tone was awesome and he filled the place with sound! Do it!

Nothing to add here but I did want to say that I love your signature block photo of the amps and two killer guitars! Karma point coming your way.

Mmmm, sounds to me DAD wants the son to have a Route 66 ;D Great choice Madison, more versitile than people give it credit for and he won't lack for headroom or volume if/when he needs it! Plus it is a rock MACHINE with the right pedal, right boost, or cranked.

He wants a Z in the Marshall vein, so to speak...I thought the 66 with it's nod to a JTM 45 would be perfect and more affordable AND obtainable than say, an SRZ65. It's starting to shape up, he has a buyer for his Crate rig, now I need to come up with the rest 'o the moola...AND a cabinet! I'm gonna put my RC Booster and an OD, TBD, on his pedal board...should rock pretty good for him. And thanks to those who have PM'd me with potential sales of their 66's, I'll keep in touch!

My Dad bought me a Fluro yellow Ibanez Jem 777 when I was a Vai freak in 1989 and I'll never forget how happy I was. Hopefully it will bring as much joy as my Jem did for me. Still have it BTW!

tas, If I could also get him a Les Paul Jr to go along with the 66, then I would truly be SUPER DAD in his eyes! But alas, I am no super dad.

Never having had children myself, i can only imagine the feeling of turning your kid on to his first real "professional" amp!! What a great feeling that would be, and then to whatch him grow musically. Very heady stuff! In about 78', my dad dropped a 73-74 fawn colored JMP MK2 Marshall half stack on me ! Chocolate brown grill, slant top. It was the most beautiful thing id ever seen. Ha!, i remember just staring at that thing for hours. LOL, like every thing else, i somehow let it go down the road!! Sh@t !!! , Anyway, its an investment youd never regret !!

He's a good kid, so much better than myself at his age. He's respectful of others, laid back, plays darn good guitar, and he's getting straight A's on his final report card...I owe him at least a Dr Z amp.
telemanic, my dad took me for a ride in 1967, into a music store, down into the basement...and there sat a new sparkle red drumset with my name on it. Awesome memories of father & son. Let the tradition continue!

Well well, looks like he's gonna owe dad even more. Just got a lead on a gig, the phone call went like this: *I understand you're looking for a band. -Yes, an outdoor party June 17. *My rock band is not available, but the honky tonk band is. -Great, you're hired. Thanks for calling, we waited until the last minute! *No problem. So tell me about the crowd you're expecting -It's for my daughter, she's graduating from HS. *Oh good. So they like country? -They LOVE country. *I mean OLD country. Hank, Merle, Parsons. Steel gitar. Lot's 'o B Bending. -Who? I know they like Toby Keith and Brad Paisley. *Tell you what, my son has a loud rock band that may be a better fit for your daughters party. -That sounds perfect...can you set it up! Ugggggg..... Looks like dad is now playing a bigger role than just supplying gear.

Pretty soon Madison is going to be sitting behind a big desk, smoking cigars, and starting every sentence with: "Listen kid....."

There was an old school booking agent around here named Irv Goldman, dead now for many years. Perfect name for a stereotypical agent in the old days. These friends of mine got married when they were still in high school. The woman played bass in the band. Irv told them when they going to get some promo pictues made "We'll put the girl in a bikini. I'll make you stars!".

Irv Goldman = bikini's and stars. Lol! Perfect ;D Sounds like a good name for a boxing manager or promoter too...maybe even a Z forum handle!

Hey Madison, I think it's cool that your son, at his age, has a MIM guitar. Good choice for him not to have it too good, too soon, if you ask me!

Well, we had a change of plans. Turns out at their age (16) they, as a group, had some friction about using anything other than a Marshall. So we decided to go the M route for now, and keep the 66 on the horizon. The pic from yesterday shows a blank stare...but trust me, that boy was all grins. This thing is LOUD, two pictures hanging on the wall actually fell to the floor when the volume hit mid way! Believe it or not, I'll be using this at an outdoor gig this weekend...my Stingray is on the way to the doc for some medication. ;D So at the risk of being "rude", here is a pic of Sean and his new "non Z" rig:

It's a DSL 50 into a 1960AX loaded with Greenbacks. I had NO IDEA four greenies could be SO loud. ;D

Oh yea, I had a 1960 Classic 4x12 Greenie cab, killer sounding cab, but way too loud for my gigs, I used it with a JCM 900, '67 Bassman head, Rout 66 and the Ghia !! Talk about a MONSTER Ghia !! LOL It's cool to see his generation diggin' "Our" music, A good friend has two sons, 17 and 18 that play guitar and drums and ALL they listen to is Skynyrd and Zep Too cool.

Young can learn a lot about guitar playing from that music. Hard to find good guitar work on the contemporary pop and rock.

I wish my dad was that cool...I drive my dad absolutely mad talking about getting new gear. Unfortunately for him, there is much more geer to go ;D Speaking of Skynyrd....I saw them and the Doobie Brothers last week. Kicka$$ show. And Zepplin is Godly.... With *very* few exceptions, I don't listen to any music after 1980
