When I got my Route 66, one of the tubes had inched up in transit and the stock retainer clip clamped down like a bear trap on one of the pins. The rounded bases on many KT66's are the real culprits here... but I think I have a solution. Marshall used these spring clips with a netting on a circular surround, By subbing this for the stock clip, it's impossible to accidentally short out a tube. The clip has enough tension to FIRMLY hold the KT66's in place. Here are a shot showing the stock retainer clip and one replaced with the Marshall retainer. Now those KT66's are snug as a bug. I'm gonna put some heat resistant tubing over the springs to eliminate rattles, but so far no rattles have materialized.

I bought actual KT66 retainer clips for my Marshall bluesbreaker and they worked great. Got them from antique electronic supply. The only thing to watch out for with them (or for that matter with these retainers shown above) is that when the amp gets cookin and vibrates, the springs can often create rattling that shows up as a buzz in the tube. I actually fixed the buzzing by placing a dab of locktite on each spring as an insulator. There are tube dampeners available on ebay which do the same thing. Basically high temp silicone rings that you fit the tube through.
