Hello one and all. Been a player for 30 years in various incarnations and different styles. Current project is Jam Camp (www.jamcamp.com).
I picked up a slightly used Route 66 yesterday. 4 words describe it for me: Oh, my, freakin' God! I've been using a early 60's brown Fender Concert for a couple of years now. Works for a lot of stuff. Prior to that I was using a Matchless Clubman 30 w/2X12 open back cab. Knowing the Matchless is what drew me to the Dr Z.
While I loved the pentode front end of the Matchless, it broke up a little soon for my taste (Class A, cathode biased), though it did sound real, real good. So I decided to investigate other pentode front end amps and see what's out there.
After some research, I decided to try the Route 66. I've played through a couple "Bluesbreaker" combos and I always liked the sound of KT66s, so it sounded like a cool amp to try.
I picked up a used one on ebay to try out, knowing I could always sell it if I didn't like it. It worked out that the seller on ebay was in driving distance for me to pick up, so I got a chance to listen to it before I took it home. We plugged it in to an Orange 2X12 cab, and plugged in my G&L ASAT, and my jaw hit the floor. Other people in the store started to take notice and come over to where I was playing.
Well, tonight, I took it over to my friend Peter's house. He has a nice collection of amps and cabinets. It sounded great through everything! Loved it through most sealed cabs (the sound through his early Hiwatt 4X12 w/Fanes was stunning), as the sealed enclosure really defined the low, low-mids of this amp. It also sounded great through all the open back enclosures, all different in there own way. This amp really has some unique character to it, to say the least. Great top end, too.
I'll stop gushing now. Just wanted to add my 2 cents about this amp. I'll search the forum for cabinet ideas (everyone feel free to offer suggestions) as well as tubes, ect...
