I hope this will help some Route 66 owners out there.
Using a Les Paul, I hooked my 66 up to the following 12 inch speakers/cabs:
1. Two Celestion G12h30's that are in my Maz Jr combo.
2. A Celestion "Wolverine" 80 watt speaker. It's 'specially designed' for Marshall to put in their TSL combo amps. (It's still in the open back Marshall combo.)
3. A Boogie Black Shadow MC-90 90 watt speaker in a closed back 1x12 cabinet. The speaker is made by Celestion for Boogie and I'm finding out it's really a Celestion g12m80...supposedly a very clean sounding speaker.
Keep in mind I LOVE the sound of a traditional 4x12 cabinet.
Here's the result in reverse order of preference:
Third place:
The Marshall "Wolverine" speaker in an open back combo. Absolutely NO bass, medium high end and all this crappy somewhat higher midrange. As compared to the other two, this is unusable.
Second place:
Celestion g12h30's in the maz combo. I've noticed playing around with various speakers, that these g12h30's have a real upper-upper midrange honk....VERY Vox-ish. Works well with single coils, but with the les paul, way to much vox coming through. Not that it's bad...usable...but a little out of place.
The winner:
The Black Shadow MC-90 (celestion g12m80). MUCH less efficient than the Wolverine speaker. (can't compare with the maz speakers because there's two of them) But that could be because of the closed back cabinet. The high ends roll off nice because of the closed back. It's not a deep cab, only 11 inches, so I wasn't expecting deep bass, but it was ok....better than the wolverine and only a little better than the maz cabinet. Both the open backs had an upper-upper midrange thing going on, but the maz speakers were musical, where the Wolverine/celestion was just ugly.
I originally purchased the closed back 1x12 cab empty and just threw the Black Shadow in it because it was laying aroung.
I thought I would use this Black Shadow until I could find a speaker I want. I figured I'd dump a Celestion Vintage 30 (60 watt) in it and call it a day. But I don't know, the black shadow's paid for.
It should also be said, I was looking for a 4x12 type sound. But even so, a fan of open backs would still come up with the same decision.
Question is, if I keep the Black shadow, will I always wonder what a Vintage 30 would sound like in it!!
