Modding an amp is a personal thing of course but why not just use pedals for your additional distortion? Diodes are diodes so why mod the amp and at the same time limit your choices? The mods will lessen your resale value also and that is something that should be mentioned at that time, even if you have restored it to it's original configuration. Just a thought.......

I dont know if you have tried any pedals into this amp yet, but the 66 and Dr. Z's other ef86 front end amps just bond with any thing you put into it. You mention neo-classical, and when I hear that term I think of the man who practically invented it, Yngwie. I know Yngwie uses a overdrive pedal with his marshall's. I think you should do the same But I am interested in putting a solid state rectifier in my rt66 as well, there are times when i want more clean headroom and a faster attack.

The 66 takes pedals very well. I would shy away from modding your 66. Try some pedals to get you where you want to be tonally & leave that 66 intact.

Before you guys go screwing with a perfectly good Rt.66...have you looked into the Delta 88? KT88 tubes, I hear it has more clean room, more overall power, and a dirt texture that's a bit similar to the Rt66 while still being its own thing...plus, SS rectifier.
Put the soldering irons down, and back slowly away from the amp...no one's gonna get hurt....just put it down and back away. ;D

For someone who just wants a lil' more headroom and punch it's worth a shot for a change of pace. It's totaly reversible and will in no way damage the amp (after the bias adjustment of course ) But dont get me wrong, I would love to get my hands on a Delta 88 as well, but it has temporarily been discontinued... And even if it was in production I wouldnt be able to afford one .....

Don't mod it. Just get a pedal. I recomend the Fulltone Fulldrive 2. It is MADE for this amp.
Stay away from the Boss Super Overdrive SD-1. Sucks all the low end away.
And an additional opinion: If you're playing neo-classical, what are you doing with this amp? Get a SRZ-65 or a 6545.
