I am contemplating getting a more portable cab for my Rt 66 and soon to be maz 38.........other than the z best. So lots of questions. Is the 2 x 10 "ported" like the 2 x 12? Does anyone have an experience with the RT 66 and the z 2 x 10 cabinet pair? I wish I could actually try these things.......but none are near by.
I love the sound of 2 speakers working together.......I am naturally drawn to the 2 x 10 configuration since I am so fond of my 2 x 12 cab. I know many of you use single 12 inch extension cabs and seem to love them......as well.
.......any advice will be appreciated!

I had a zbest 2x10. It sounded ok with my 66, but then I tried my marshall 2x12 1936 cab with a weber blue dog and silver bell (ceramic) and to my ears it sounds much better. I found the 2x10 with the 66 to sound a bit small, the 2x12 just sounds bigger and fuller. I sold the 2x10.

Yeah, the marshall just sounds bigger, the 2x10 sounded good but I just didnt have the balls I was looking for. The marshall also is a closed back, gives me more thump. At first I tried the marshall with the stock celestion gt75s, sounded ok, but not too inspiring, then I tried the webers and holy crap!!

I've got both a Z Best 2x12 and a Z 2x10 that I use with my Rt. 66, both with stock speakers.
I generally like the Z best better with humbuckers, and the 2x10" better with single coils. To my ears, you lose a little presence (on the top and bottom) with the 2x10", but you gain a wonderful warmth in the midrange.

That's what I noticed about the 2-10, a stronger midrange.

I have a ZBest 2X12 w/ RI GB's in it. It sounds fantastic. I use it with my Rt. 66. I also wanted to get a smaller cab to use w/ the 66. I drove an hr. and a half to TrueTone Music in Santa Monica to try out smaller cabs. They're a big Z dealer, great guys and have a lot of Z stock. I brought my 66, Strat and pedal board and spent an hour comparing the Z 2X10 ( w/ Z custom speakers) and Z 1X12 ( G12H-30) I ended up buying the 1X12. To me- it sounded bigger. It did Not sound like my Zbest. Both the 2X10 and the 1X12 were open back cabs. The 2X10 sounded good but just a bit smaller sounding as well as a bit edgy/midrangy to my ears. Try them both if you can. If you really want a 2X10, Truetone may still have one in stock. I was there about a month ago. Call them at 310-393-8232 ( hope it's OK to post a contact number)

If you want to keep the closed back/ported sound of the Z-best 2x12, then IMHO, the 1x12 that sounds most similar to that is the Bogner Cube. Not EXACTLY the same, but very similar. The Z 1x12 open back also sounds fantastic, particuarly when loaded with an Alnico Blue. But it is a very different tone than the Z-best 2x12.

I tried out a 66 through a Z 2x10 & I'm a HUGE fan of Z's 10's but I have to admit the 66 sounded best through a 2x12 Z-Best.

Z best and 2 x 10 cab are very different cabs for very different sounds.

I originally bought a Rt 66 with a single G12H30 for the portability. Doc's new small cabinets are very light. It sounded great. I recently added another single cab with a Celestion Blue. The two speakers compliment each other so well, and two open back 12 cabs make for a big full sound. It sounds even better now, and if I don't want to lug two cabinets around I just grab one. I can't say enough about how good the Blue sounds with this amp!

jb,
I've got the same setup - a Rt 66 with two 1x12 cabs, one with a Blue and the other with a G12H30. The Blue sounds great, but sometimes I'm getting more speaker breakup than I really want, I've been considering trying one of the Weber Blue clones because they handle more power and I suspect they wouldn't break up as much at the volumes I sometimes play at.

kc, I have not noticed that yet, however, I am still breaking in the Blue. At what level, or settings, do you feel you hear too much breakup from the Blue? It must be pretty loud. The new 50w Celestion Alnico may also be consideration for you. jb

I really don't have to turn the 66 volume up very far - only around 10 o'clock (and using an Airbrake too). I think in part it's due to the pup I'm using, which is a DiMarzio VV Solo - it seems to be pretty hot; and also because it's a Clapton Strat and I use the mid-boost quite a bit of the time. The other day, I plugged my old Strat into this rig and it didn't have nearly the volume that the Clapton Strat has (with no mid-boost on) and was cleaner sounding. I'll wait on the new 50 watt Celestions until I hear more about them - if I was going to buy a speaker today, I'd go with a Weber as they've had enough positive reviews to make me feel comfortable.

kc, I think you are right, that it may be related to the pickups and how you are boosting the signal. Last night I plugged straight in with my strat type guitar with the amp controls all at 1 o'clock and the airbrake on 2 and both speakers sounded amazing to me. This amp needs to be turned up! jb
