Well,my Tone Tubby and 1x12 closed back cab arrived the other day. After hooking it up and nearly having another coronary. Having previous experienced first hand the competent work of USPS - Australia Post safe delivery system . I nearly lost it, as no sound was coming through when I hooked up my Maz Invasion.
Hmmm, I said to myself After sorting the proplem, replacing some suspiscious wire that came with the cab, I proceeded to test drive my new speaker.
I plugged in my Fralin real 54 loaded, 61 relic and started plucking away. No power chord stuff, I just started a little groove. I don't know if any of you are familair with R.E.M s - (Me in Honey) but that's the riff. Hmmm was once again going through my head,I wasn't getting all that excited. I set the controls of my Invasion to Vol 9,Treb 12:30,Mid 11:30,Bass 2, Presence 2,Reverb 8-9 and Master just flat out! I really wasn't diggin this vibe guys. I thought maybe I can give it some pre-amp overdive by turning up the volume and then we might get some breakup but hey it wasn't coming. I then started getting really pissed off......I was home during the day on my break from work so I decided to just say what the heck. I turned both volumes up full blast swapped geeeeetars (LP standard) and started playing some AC/DC,Led Zep etc etc.... I guess many of you are asking what happened next?
I lost it!
I turned both Volumes up full........ and launched into some really aggressive stuff like the Ocean. whole lotta love etc..etc...well this thing just wasn't distorting. It was staying clean as a whistle. I plugged the 2x12(weber blue, silver bell) back in as I thought it may have been the amp or tubes and had to immediately back the preamp off. She was once agin singing like a angle. All the chime and ringing tones as well as big, clear bottom end came back.
The guy that I had bought my Ghia off told me he had used the Ghia in a Z best loaded with not one but you guessed it 2 Tone Tubbies. I just can't work it what kinda tone he pulls with that kind of setup as 1 in a larger 30 watt Invasion is as clean as a whistle so 2 being driven by 18 watts just leaves me asking anyone,
Am I missing the point or what?
The blonde Ghia I bought a week or so ago should be arriving any day now. It might just surprise me and sound killer with a single Tubby but for my knowledge that speaker and any amp under 50 watts just doesn't cut it unless you use a heap of stomp boxes to alter your original tone. It might be ok for other stles of music but for roots and blues and good ol' rock n roll it ain't a good match with a small amp. The KT45 should be a great match for the Tone Tubby. It's a big amp and I think if it is paired with the Tubby, will yield some amazing tones that would easily overpower 2 great speakers like celestion blues.
Looks like I'm going with my first choice. After some expensive experimenting and some well repected advice/opinions(Thanks Myles, great guy ) I'm getting a 2x12 cab, a pair of celestion blues or if finances are thin, a pair of Weber blue dogs and just plug in,crank it up and howl and wail.......
