I saw an RXES for sale and it does not have the LED in front for the overdose mode and no footswitch, just a control instead. Is this the same as the RXES that is in production now? Any differences in the design?
I guess it's just an older version, when was this model produced?

That's how mine is too. I don't know how many were made that way, but the footswitch was introduced very shortly after this model came out. I've heard of guys converting them to the footswitch configuration, but I'm not sure what it takes.

I had an older Rx without the footswitch. I sent it to the Doc and he updated it to the new specs. I believe it was $150.00 including the footswitch.

what do you mean by new specs? Do you just mean the footswitch and LED on the front panel instead of the switch or something internally? I had an older Rx without the footswitch. I sent it to the Doc and he updated it to the new specs. I believe it was $150.00 including the footswitch.

Actually you can get mulitple levels of boost with a simple short/open channel switch plugged into the low input and your guitar plugged into the high input. With the OD swtich off you can use the footswitch to boost, then you can hit the OD switch to get more boost, and turn it on off with the footswitch. I believe this works with the Ray too (single level of course), but I have only done it on the RxES. I have the switch model with no LED made in 2005. I will caveat this with depending on how high you have the volume cranked you can get a heck of a "pop".

I just picked up an older model w/no led... The descripton is right on, ac30 meets dumble... it breaks up with a nice sag to it.. At 1:00 with the overdose on (high input) and use a compressor and it gives a really fat tone.. sustain is really nice too, reminds me of the click channel of an ftr37 in the sense that you get beautiful feedback even when it's not cranked and juiced with a pedal.. with the volume around noon and a nice clean boost you get very nice ac30ish type breakup!
The low input with the dose off gives really full-bodied cleans... all in all, I'm really impressed with the amp but I don't know what to do with speakers.. Right now I'm using the z best stock.. I tried it through an open back 2-12 with scumback h75's and it was WAY too trebly and lost all the thickness and body it had with the z best.. could somebody suggest 2 12" speakers that would retain the full bodied notes, but give me less boomy cleans than I get on the z best....

I've been playing it through a single Alnico Gold in a THD 2x12 cab. The cab reinforces the bottom, and the speaker has that trademark middle crunch they are so famous for. It can get a bit bright if you're running the treble too high, but overall it sounds pretty great I think.
That said, my RXES sounds fantastic through the Weber ceramic Blue Dog I have. I have a 50 watt version and it's real warm on top, and the RXES is just perfect for that. The only reason I haven't been gigging that speaker is I don't want an 8 ohm and 16 ohm speaker in my 2x12 cab.
I've tried my RXES on just about every speaker I have here and I think it sounds pretty great with all of them. But that Blue Dog - whoa!

The early ones have a switch instead of a footswitchable circuit. We can definitely make it footswitchable if you want that, we have modified quite a few of them.
