Ok, so how many of us have mixed a balanced pre amp tube in with the rest of your tube stock? Is there any way for the average person with a multi meter to test if a preamp tube is balanced or not?

You can't test them with a MM to my knowledge. The tubes have to have a current run into them in order to get readings. MM's don't generate such loads.
I've thought about buying a tube tester for the exact reason you mentioned (and so I can tell how much gain is left in some of the discarded tubes in my tube box), but just haven't figured out what unit would work for these purposes. Lots of folks seem to use the Hickok 539b or 539c units, but I have no idea if they're a good fit.

teleric,
Check w/ Myles. He'll let you know if those testers are what you need.

Sorry for the delay .... I was on the road in Arizona.
Anyway ... you cannot test a tube with a conventional multi meter.
If anybody is in So Cal and wants tubes tested I am always happy to do this for Z folks at no charge.
